Max & Dean Year Out 05/06
Hey all,
Been great to hear from you - and lovely to know that we're not forgotten after all this time away. Have been seeing weather reports for the UK and we are pretty gutted to be missing a glorious summer at home. But then we quickly remind ourselves that we're not working and the green monster soon disappears.
Arequipa was a lovely place to hang out for a few days - the city really is very beautiful. A white volcanic rock called sillar is used in a most of the building and the architecture is amazing. We walked around the Monasteria de Santa Catalina a few days ago which was built in the 16th Century and takes up a whole city block - you would not believe how the nuns used to live. Also did a 2 day trip to the Colca Canyon which was fab. I however have another illness to add to the ever increasing list - I now know that I am very prone to altitude sickness. We ascended to just below 5000m on the trip - and I had no idea which way was up - notwithstanding the blinding pain from probable brain swelling ( I read that can happen). Colca Canyon is about 3000m deep at its highest point and Condors ride thermal drafts up and over viewpoints in the valley - they're bloody massive. So cool.
Today we made the 5 hr bus journey from Arequipa to Puno - which is on the shore of Lake Titicaca. Tomorrow we're going to go to to visit the Uros Floating Islands and will overnight with a family on another island, which should be loads of fun. Am really looking forward to it. Moving onto Cuzco after this trip and a train trip to Machu Pichu - will probably skip Bolivia (anyone read Marching Powder???)
Take care xxxx
