Hello from sunny Sydney!! Thought it had been a while since our last update and so much has happened over the last 3 months, I'll try not to make it too long! We now have a beautiful apartment, good jobs and have made some lovely friends. After arriving in Sydney back in September we were so fortunate to be able to stay with my lovely kiwi friend Emma in Cronulla. It was incredible to not be in a hostel and to finally have a proper catch up! Cronulla is stunning and one of my favourite places in Sydney but just a bit far out of the city for us atm. We arrived on the Sunday evening and had so much planned for the next few days, both of us had heaps of interviews and house viewings and we were totally exhausted. I was fortunate enough to be offered a job as soon as we arrived and started that week, which meant I needed to go shopping as I had nothing suitable for work (what a shame)!! My first job was working for Nokia Devices at Microsoft, this was a pretty great little job. I worked with amazing people in the best location and just had to sit on reception and do very little. I was there for around 5 weeks before they found someone permanent and then it was back to job hunting for me, I took a week off between jobs to explore Sydney but I got bored very quickly. I have been so fortunate with work and was offered another job with an IT company as their office coordinator. It's basically a PA job but I am loving it and it's such a great opportunity for me.
Max has been working full on with a few different companies, from roofing to setting up marquees and now labouring but the money is really good and there is always work available. Hopefully in the New Year he'll find something more permanent but life is pretty good here! We have also been so lucky with our apartment, we must have viewed about 10 places in 2 days when we first got here and they were all awful, dirty, student like houses. Then one day I went to look at an apartment 10 minutes from where I work and fell in love, it's in a really lovely building in Pyrmont with a gym and roof top BBQ area and I took it before Max had a chance to say no. It's in a perfect location less than a 5 minutes to Darling Harbour and 10 minutes to work. We are currently in a house share with two lovely Lithuanian girls who are just amazing to live with. We have been so fortunate since we got here!
Sydney life is pretty bloody good. The lifestyle here is so much better than at home and we are able to do so much more whilst saving more than we ever could at home. We spend most of our weekends going to the beach, exploring the quirky towns surrounding Sydney, eating and drinking in stunning bars and restaurants. All day drinking is pretty big here and I can see why, spending Sunday afternoons in the sun with friends is how every weekend should be spent. I think Cronulla is my favourite place but it's about an hour away so we often head to Coogee, Manly or Bondi. Bondi is pretty lively and has some cool bars and shops but it's so busy and full of tourists so we try not to go there too often. On the occasional rainy weekends we still try and make the most of our days off and have been to Madame Tussauds, the aquarium, Sydney Zoo, The Westfield towers etc, there is so much to do and it's all so close to where we live which is fab.
We have also managed to take a little trip down to Melbourne a few weeks ago which was lovely, we decided we were over flying and took a cruise down for a long weekend. It was definitely something different and was so lovely but I don't think I'd do it again. The way down was gorgeous, we just chilled out ate yummy food and drank (a lot) then we spend a lovely day in Melbourne exploring the city before heading back to Sydney. Unfortunately the journey back wasn't so smooth and I spent the rest of the time sick sea and unable to eat, drink or even stand without being sick. But we made it back in one piece and want to start planning our next trip.
We are hoping that we'll have the opportunity to stay here on a more permanent basis or at least for a few more years but we still have so much we want to do. I can't believe its Christmas week, time has gone SO quickly! I am working most of Christmas which is a shame but we have lots planned and I'm only doing short days so can't complain. We decided that we'd host Christmas at our place, which I am so excited about but didn't realise would be such hard work! Hopefully all goes smoothly as we are cooking for 8 people, but if all else fails we have enough alcohol to last a while! On Boxing Day we are heading to the races, I really hope the weather holds out as we've had a fair few storms the past few weeks!
Then in the New Year we will start thinking about our next steps, either to stay here for the next few years or to continue our travels and come home in the summer. We plan to visit New Zealand, Fiji and Bali whilst we are here and we'd both love to spend more time in Asia but it all depends on my job. Max is still hoping to go diving with sharks so maybe we'll take a trip down to Adelaide soon too. In January we have the gorgeous Annie coming to stay for the weekend of Australia day which I am SO excited about then in Feb I'll head down to Geelong for a long weekend to continue our catch ups!
This year has been incredible, we have had the best time travelling and have met some unforgettable people on the way. We have made such special memories and I can't wait to continue doing so in 2015. It's hard being away from our families at Christmas but feel so lucky to spend it in this beautiful city with great friends.
Hope everyone has a lovely Christmas and will try update you in the New Year.
Lots of love
xxxxx
