AirCanada flight went fast - 14 hours - although the seat controls didn't work. The steward had to lay on the floor and bang some gears to get it to recline. Roughing it in Business Class, so wasn't too shook up. 7 hour layover in Hong Kong. Bought the $14 ticket to train into the city from airport. Decided to get off in Kowloon and take a ferry over to the Hong Kong Island. Nothing to see near the Kowloon train station, so I hail a cab and tell him to take me to the Star Ferry depot. Instead he jumps in heavy traffic and takes the Mid-Harbor tunnel . No speak English. Cabbie just decided to overrule my ferry plans. Oh Well......
I get out at Central train station so I know where it is. I take off walking towards the higher part of city to see older streets.....towards Hollywood Road and the Antique district. Hong Kong smells like perfume, diesel fuel, stir fried food, incense, and fish. Potent blend. The streets are choked with people and street vendor stalls decked out with Christmass goods. I check out the food stalls, raw/live seafood and fragrant vegetables everywhere. Durian fruit stink permiates the air. I buy a suitcase in a stall to make up for the one which I'd carried on with broken handle and zipper. At $35...wondering if I paid too much. I get a train back to the airport but only after finding out that because I got off in Kowloon, they need another $14 to get back to Airport. The agent takes pity on me and gives me a pass card. Make my Dragon Air flight to Guangzhou.
