This is probably the worse written up extract so far lol.Just try and ignore that and read what we did J
I'm now miles behind this now so i'll try and keep it pretty short.
We spent 4 days in Kuala Lumpur and coming from the thai islands back into the big cities again did seem a little bit strange but surprisingly we seemed to take to the place like a duck to water.Being ruled by the british back in the day the city had developed well with the help from a few large corporations like Petronas and Menara.Everything was efficient and close together so getting around was easy enough so we often walked to places or just jumped on the over ground. The first day we went to a huge shopping mall called 'Times Square' and it boasted an indoor theme park, 10-screen cinema and bowling alley. After a bit of light shopping where i picked up a new smart shirt and a t-shirt we had a mc donalds and a game of bowling which i won after a wavy start.
After visiting the mall we had a split decision on what we both wanted to do.I am obsessed with tall buildings so I wanted to go up the 4th tallest tower in the world (43rd tallest building in the world) and Dan wasn't bothered because it cost £8 and we would be going up the Petronas Towers for free the following day.So i caught the metro over there and Dan went to have a look at some old English buildings. The Menara Tower was well worth the £8 entry fee.For the price you got an F1 simulation ride, a donkey ride (i left that), a look in a mini zoo (bit poo) and entry to the top of the tower.Being a tower though it wasn't actually that much lower than some of the top offices of the Petronas Towers but the view of the towers wasn't that great from here being built almost side on to the Twin Towers.Turned out Dan ended up at the national museum lol.I think he was there about 20mins and paid 40p to get in....he must of been pretty bored to actually pay for a museum. This is Dan after all.
That evening we spotted a Nando's andDan does love his Nando's.I've heard everyone mention is back at home and have seen facebook campaigns to get a Nando's in Burton but i didn't know what it was but i have to say it was guuuuurd! So good we went back the next day.It wasn't overly priced and a meal and a drink cost about £4 and we were only having 1 meal a day and making use of the free breakfast by having 6-8 slices of toast J
We had a communal area in our hostel which often had dvd's playing and free wifi so we spent most of late evenings in there and on the first night i sent Dan to the shop to get a couple of beers.Of all the beers in the world he picks the only one you can get everywhere, Carlsberg.I was not happy. Then he explained it was that, Tiger or Heinekken which were more expensive. They cost £3 each aswell!!!!It was safe to say after paying that price the drinking was about to have a short vacation until we could afford it again (justify paying it more like).
The following morning we got up about 7:30am to make breakfast and get in the queue for the Petronas Towers that opened up at 8:30am i think. We queued for about 30mins and got our ticket to go up to the bridge at 6:00pm so we had the rest of the day to wonder around before returning. We also got some pictures in the morning continuing our tradition of random poses in famous places.I went for a sailor and Dan went for Hitler, obviously, with the twin towers in the back ground. We watched a nice 'look at me' video about how Petronas has done so much for Malaysia and how great a company it is before we had our 10mins up on the lower level of the bridge. The views weren't bad but i had been up the menara tower which had 360 degree views of the city but it was free and it was still cool to go up.
I think we spent most of the next day inside because it was raining all day but on our last day before catching our overnight train to Singapore we went to find the old English buildings Dan couldn't find originally and took a few pictures. It was still only 1pm and our train was at 10:30pm that evening so we went back to the times square shopping centre to occupy ourselves for the afternoon and the intention of going to the cinema to watch green zone.I'm sure that film came out ages ago back at home but still we booked our ticket for 4:50pm (3 hours away). There was earlier times but weirdly enough our times cost £1 less (£1.60) so being tight arses and figuring we would be waiting somewhere anyway we walked around the shopping centre and grabbed some food.We found the amusement arcade and we grabbed some tokens and played a few games of time crises, basketball and racing. It burnt a bit of time and was so cheap. The token cost 10p each and most things were 2 tokens....so 20p for a go, bargain. The film was a bit poo but it was quite funny being in a foreign cinema.I was sat next to an Indian lady who i thought smelt once she sat next to me.But it wasn't until the end of the film, after she had held up a blanket to her nose, after she had moved seats and me keep complaining about this soggy smell that i realised it was my feet.Dan knew, n said nothing!
Anyway, we caught our train in good time squeezing in another mc d's and changing our left over money because for some gay reason Singapore like to have their own currency and immigration. The train was alright and we had our own little sections that could be curtained off with a window to look out.I did wake up a few times but i was being rocked like a cradle!Waking up because your being swung left and right so your nearly falling out of your bed.At Singapore immigration we had no idea what was happening but eventually we got off with our bags, got our stamp and followed everyone else.We wasn't sure if we were in Singapore or not but after watching a few other backpackers it was apparent we were queuing to get back on the train, which lasted another 45mins or so.At the station, again, we were lost.We had the addresses of 2 hostels but nothing booked as usual. We had noted the addresses and the closest MRT (metro) station but couldn't find a station anywhere.Being Singapore we expected the train station to merge with the underground but it didn't and so we were stuck. But clever Dan also noted a bus station and we found a bus stop with the correct number bus. This caused a problem that caught us out though.Yes we had money but for a ticket but these bus drivers don't carry change and we needed $2.40 (£1.20) for our 2 tickets.I had a $2 but apart from that it was a $10!We didn't know what to do and after looking like prats a singaporeon came over and said how much do you need, "$2.40" we said and he paid the lot and sat down no questions asked.I gave him the $2 note i had to make up for it and just said thankyou. This was the first instance with a local and from where we have been it shocked us a bit.
Singapore in a nut-shell is the perfect city.1-2% unemployment rate, clean as a whistle, great education system, more money than they know what to do with and everyone is polite with manners. There's no pushing and shoving here, just reasonable people who have clearly had a good upbringing.Because everyone has too much money here it made everything really expensive.A Pint cost $14 (£7) but on St.Patricks day it was on offer $10 for a guiness. This is just a standard bar on the water front and even in the shops it was $4 for a small can.
We stayed at Drop Inn Hostel which is a new hostel only 4 months old owned by a young girl who had given up everything to do what she wanted, set up her own hostel. After getting some investors together and raising the capital she created the hostel and made it her own.You instantly felt at home here and she never came across as the boss but as herself chilling out with everyone, chatting and beating me and connect 4.Its the first hostel in Asia we have been to where a night has been organised for everyone and Ruo Yun (the owner) arranged to go out for St.Patricks day.Me and Dan had seen the price of alcohol and so decided we would make a wise investment of buying a bottle of spirit.Dan gambled and went for Brandy, which he doesn't drink, and i played safe with vodka.Vodka = 750ml = £19, and Dan's 700ml Brandy = £17! But it was an investment which would last 2 nights pre lash.We got the drinking games going with everyone in the hostel with even the Ruo Yun joining in J I think nearly everyone went out which was great and we soon got to know everyone. We all had our guiness hats on and drinks just kept popping up out of the blue for free.No idea where they came from, i think a few from Ruo Yun because she got free drinks having worked there before and some from random people.I was drinking guiness quite a bit even though i don't like it lol.But it was free and was going down.
After chatting to Ruo Yun and a little kiss...cough cough she headed home because she had to do the breakfast in the morning but we some how were chatting to some local business men who worked in the near by sky scrapers on there huge pay packets obviously having top jobs in the financial district. One guy wanted a 3 way press up competition with a $50 bet on it but after a short discussion and realising we could get a good 3 out of the 8 of us we turned them down. Then things changed.A guy put the $50 note on the floor under a beer and said whoever can do the most press-ups wins the $50 nothing lost. His mate went first, 26.I went next, 26.Then the guy who's money was at risk stepped up and did 49.Dan felt confident and whacked out a steady 50, picking up the $50 note with his teeth and backflipping...look at me!Dan went to buy him a drinkbut he refused and then bought Dan another drink and then filled up a bucket full of ice with beers of all sorts and gave it to us all. With the price of beer at the bar it must of been atleast $80 worth of beer so we carried on wading through that.Dan again was chatting to the guy who then asked him how confident of beating him again was he and does he want to put a $1000 bet on.He turned it down, mainly because cash machines wouldn't let you draw that kind of money out lol.It was a good night, and a bit different to our usual smash ups.I never spent a penny in a ridiculously priced place and Dan made a $15 profit lol. That's a first. At the end of the night there were 3 indian girl dan was chatting to so i joined them and had a little chat.1 girl smoked and Dan was playing with them and their lighter when he lit the top of a whole packet of fags lol.The girl wasn't happy but it did make me laugh.
On our first day we just wondered around the city looking at places on the way.We accidently stumbled across the grand prix circuit so we walked around some of the track and around the pits with no one around.Back at home you would have kids hanging around there drinking or graffiti'ing the place but not here you can happily look in the pit rooms, stand on the pole and just walk around the track.
We didn't do too much in Singapore because it was expensive and we were happy to just see a bit of the city but being in a great hostel we could just sit around watching films, playing games and chatting to everyone in the lobby. It was also raining quite heavily outside so we chilled for most of the afternoon before heading to a 24 hour shopping centre which we spent about 20mins walking through before leaving because it was so cluttered it was mad.How they fit everything into that huge place i don't.It was worse than TK Max.
On our last full day we planned to go out to one of the clubs but we wasn't sure which. We had a choice of a couple of big places but after a bit of research we couldn't avoid going to what kept coming up as one of the best clubs in the world, zouk.Ruo Yun didn't like it there anymore and recommended a different place but we had to see what zouk was like for ourselves so we went there.Again we had our pre session and got 8 people out for it.Ruo Yun sadly didn't come out but it was good fun.It cost $28 for men and $20 for girls (grrrr) which got you 2 free drinks. We were drunk before we got there so we had planned not to buy many drinks because of the price and only paid for 1 more after our free ones. That still cost $11 though!Me and Dan have seemed to pick up a Chris Pontis theme now and bringing our party dances to the clubs.Even the locals loved it lol but we looked like idiots with 2 lads, both with their shirts off dancing up 1 guy in the party boy style. At one point i had my trousers around my ankles party boying but it was short lived because someone decided to bag me and i'm not having my bits out in Singapore. Here there are fines for everything!$500 fine for eating on the metro!
Before we had left we had left a mess and the policy at the hostel is to clean up after you.But no one did and Ruo Yun wasn't happy because at the end of the day there are 26 people in the hostel and its not fair on them to be having their breakfast with a load of beer cans so she cleared it up and got quite angry.Even i couldn't cheer her up before we left but i never realised how much it got to her.The next morning i had decided to sleep in the lobby with all the cushions whilst everyone made it to their bed, probably not the best idea knowing that Ruo Yun was going to coming in 2 hours later.2 hours later she came in, took all the tables off me that someone had decided to pile on top of me and said nothing.I said morning and got a short and blunt 'hi'.She was clearly not happy and had a bit of a mood on with everyone responsible.I kept quiet for the next 30mins saying absolutely nothing! She was in and out smoking, de-stressing and because it was raining and i'm british i asked about the weather lol."Is it going to stop raining today", "I dunno" i got bluntly. To which i replied "well i wasn't expecting you to give me the weather man's report".I got some toast and when a couple more people came down she asked me to sit outside with her for a smoke, even though i don't smoke. She just wanted to get me on my own and talk about it.She was quite upset and had a little cry so i comforted her and gave her my opinion. She was fine about it all, just upset, and wasn't blaming me but i was at the receiving end of her emotion.I didn't mind at all, there was something about this girl i loved and happily chatted for a long time. But when you put in all the hard work of building your dream and only being set up 4 months it was her little baby and when she saw it get messed up for the time she took it to heart.
We got on well though and chilled out together all afternoon laughing and joking. It took a couple of hours to put the smile back on her face but she was back to her own cheery self then J to the relief of probably everyone in the hostel lol.I wish i could of stayed there longer as i really enjoyed my time in Singapore but our flight was fixed and we couldn't move it back else i think we would have.I put my time solely down to Ruo Yun making a great hostel and being such good company.
We went and caught our flight after a short panic when we got to the airport and read and advert with the time and date on which suggested it was the 19th and not the 20th.Dan had to double check and it turned out the advert was wrong and not us, phew!Though I would have happily gone back to Drop Inn for 1 more night.Another thing i should mention is i have lost my camera.£370 worth of camera L i didn't care too much though, my thinking is always that its just a camera and it can be replaced.I have insurance that should cover the majority of it but i do have the hassle of getting a police report at some point to say it was stolen.I should of been a bit more careful but ah well its too late. But then just to add to the poo'ey day i got to security at the plane to board my flight when i had left my pen knife in my bag...it was spotted and i have to sign some paper work for it.Bit annoying i lost a pen knife worth the same price of the flight i was about to catch.
My infection had left ages ago and although i can't hear out of it that well i didn't think anything of it.Every time i swallow or yawn i can hear a watery sound so i should of carried on putting the drops in my ear but even worse when we got above 30,000ft altitude my ear was trying to implode from the pressure and i tried everything to try and sort it out but i had to sit in agony for 2 hours with no pain killers.Hopefully if i whack some more ear stuff in then it won't be as bad when i head to Darwin.I have 4 flight in a week so i don't want to be that much pain for them.Maybe i shouldn't fly but i'll live and just get on with it.
We are now in Bali which i originally didn't know why i put it on my itinery but i did and it wasn't what we expected.I figured it would be a quietbeach place but its the opposite. Its a big surfing place with 6-10ft waves on our local beach and bigger on others and its also has a crazy night life.At the aitport we met up with a guy who had no accommodation like ourselves and was heading to the same area looking for a cheap place to stay. His name is Glyn and he split our taxi with us and stopped in the same place as us.We got there at 1am and went out for a few beers.Because i had only had 2 hours sleep the night before i was practically out of it and it was until 4am before got back.We met up with Glyn the following day and headed to the beach together where we played volleyball, frisby and jumped a few waves.Straight away we got annoyed with all the hastle you get from street traders and its pretty bad here constantly shouting "transport, transport"...."massaaaaaaaaaage"...and being offered ALOT of drugs.Speed seems the common one here along with opium and mushrooms again.
We had a big night that night and invested in a bottle of vodka for me, a bottle of wine for Dan and a few beers for Glyn.We played a few drinking games and got another beer each once we had finished our drinks before clubbing until about 4am in the morning. What ended the night was a dirty pick-pocketer!He felt dan's pockets which he felt and i saw so I told him to f'off and jog on, waving towards the door and telling him to leave. He obviously didn't like me because i got a soft girl slap and then he tried to swing for me after i again told him to jog on lol.Dan had him by the neck though and a german guy i had been talking to who had seen this guy pick pocketing back us up along with Glyn.Pick-pocketers don't work alone though and you soon get 2/3 other guys pouncing on the situation. An aussie guy who had been working there for one and a half years told Dan they will probably try and stab me on the way home so he gave me the key and told me to leave straight away.I went around the back and flung to the exit.Again i got lost finding our place and met Dan half way back (5min walk) so he let me walk back waiting around for a few mins to make sure i hadn't been followed....all ended fine in the end but what do you do.Let them carry on and stay out of it or actually speak up.Who knows, but i felt i did a good thing.
3rd night in we just went for a few more beers. We've had atleast 10 large beers (640ml) a day so far and that doesn't seem to be dropping but it is the last place on our travels that lager will be cheap enough to drink through the day so we are making the most of it.The night turned into quite a drunken one and we were drinking again until 3am just chatting to some people and chilling out with live music.Today we have just sat on the beach topping up my sunburn a little more and resting for what should be another sociable night.Hopefully my liver can survive the next few nights and make it to oz where it should be safe for a while.
