The Return to Lindeman Island
Due to the shortage of money funds after paying out for the van, our east coast package and then still having New Zealand to pay out for, we decided we desperately needed to work if we wanted to stay in Australia past New Zealand. The easy option to us was to contact Lindeman Island and see if they would have all 3 of us as it was on route down the coast rather than getting to Sydney and having ther hassle of finding work within 3weeks. Luckily all 3 of us was able to work. This time it would just be a short 3weeks work, before carrying on our travels to Sydney for our 26th October flight.
Jamie left on the 9th September and Emily and I wasn't due to start till the 16th, so Emily had gone back to Cairns for 4days to see some friends she had met last time. However, after just dropping Jamie off at Shute Harbour for his ferry, I received a much pleasurable phone call from my good friend Kirstyn who works in the HR department and her good news was that I could return to the island as early as the next day as people had left or got N.B.O'd. Buzzing with happiness that wouldn't have to spend a week in Airlie on my own, I caught some last few sun rays and then treated myself to $20 haircut ready for my big return to Lindeman Island- back where i belong.
I decided to catch the first ferry over as im up at 6.30am most mornings so not much point hanging around till the afternoon. That morning i caught the 8.55am ferry to Hamilton but then bad luck struck as there was a technical fault with the ferry to Lindeman and there wouldn't be one till 3.15pm so i had a very long, lonely wait at Hamilton Island for 5.5hours.
After all the commotion I finally docked at Lindeman Island at around 3.45pm and up on the jetty, much to my suprise was my beautiful friends in Simone, Maia, Justine and of course Kirstyn. After just 10mins being back on the island chatting away and taking the memorable bus ride up to GE land, it felt like i'd never been away but yet strange to be back at the same time. I went straight into the staff kitchen to see Jamie cooking up the nights dinner with big chef Aaron. Most of this night was spent catching up with all my old friends i knew from last time but also meeting the new faces who had arrived in my absense.
This time I wasn't down for housekeeping but was to work in the main resturant as a waiter. The hours was split shifts and most of mine was 12-4 then 6-10 so i did get the mornings off to chill by the pool or gym it with Jamie. Once Vicky the housekeeping manager knew i was back, she was staright onto HR asking why i wasnt doing that job and made them swap me to housekeeping as she really wanted me back as the resort was to be at its busiest. I only got to spend a week in the resturant. I did actaully enjoy it and it was alot easier than housekeeping but the hours was a bit of a pain having to work every night till 10pm plus the money was $1 less an hour and the whole purpose was to gain as much dollar as possible in the short time we had.
After speaking with Vicky, I made sure I was going back on my conditions of that I had my old zone back (zone 8- the biggest one) and also I could regain my basket that I tagged last time and my water bottle was still on the side waiting for me. It must be fate! Because of me working the resturant first, I had a different coloured uniform to the housekeepers so I made myself the new supervisor because of me looking different and even got to do the morning meeting talks for the day and tell people what to do- this got a good few laughs during the day and just made the atmosphere a bit lighter in the work place.
One thing was missing though... my beloved Peter (Snake) and Ash. The place just wasn't quite the same without them there and I compared alot of things to last time. Just the simple things such as the movie nights or the crazy games of UNO just wasn't there this time. I did however meet some more new friends. We did get very friendly with 2 Canadian girls- Ashlyn and Emily and also a week later 2 new Danish girls arrived called Maiken and Sine who were a really good laugh and down with Jamie and my humour which is unusual. We spent alot of time with these people and went to alot of shows at night to past the nights. There was also the DISCO nights! I made sure i went to almost every single one this time as that was my biggest regret last time. So the first DISCO was on the Wednesday and we made our room the party room of the island and had most people in there. Jamie and I were hammered and on the way to the disco, Simone and I made a bit of an idiot of ourselves by staring through the sports shack that all the G.O's in there having a meeting and we just stared through thinking that they couldn't see us for some reason- so much fun. I did alot of crazy things whilst under the influence of alcohol at these disco's but hey ho, all good fun!
I also took Sine and Maiken up the mountain 1night with Jamie and acted as though it was aguided tour then thats always the experience of
coming back down in the pitch black. We had a day at Plantation beach one day off with a few people which was good fun and also just nights spent round GE kitchen chatting and making our own entertainment. We even had 1 night of skinny dipping in the pool after a heavy gym session, we was joined by Ashlyn and Emily so we decided to dive in at like 9pm.
Once the 3weeks was up, I couldn't believe it. The time had just flown by and it only seemed like a week. I'd had an total blast looking back and just like last time, when the time come, I didn't want to leave- neither did Emily however Jamie didn't feel the same as it had been a bit boring and quiet for him. The place just makes me feel so at home and the island is so beautiful especially with the people who you meet whilst there. Like i say, the time soon come round and the time had come for us to pack up our bags and leave the island on Saturday 1st September and get back on the road with our van. Our first stop was to be Rockhampton- a 6.5hour drive to kick start off again. Beautiful.
Hope u've enjoyed the update.
