Well, what can I say? It's been a long time coming but it came. The end of our travels nears upon us. Arrived in the Big Apple today and i'm already fascinated by what the city has to offer. Just been out for a mandatory jog around Astoria, Queens (as one does) and about to catch some zzz's outside of the car for the first time in a while. But anyways, here's what we've been up to the last 2 weeks.
From Clemson, we headed east to Charleston to take a glimpse of the infamous Fort Sumpter. From there we headed north to Mrtyle Beach for some tan time! Now Myrtle Beach is Mexico's equivalant to Cancun. Miles of beautiful golden sand surrounded by hotels, restaurants and tourists. We spent most of our time lying on the beach (ipods in), playing crazy golf and avoiding the police. I say this because one fine morning as we arose from a sound nights sleep, parked outside the visitors center, someone from a neighbouring building called the police explaining "There are 2 homeless guys sleeping outside our office!". The police officer was actually quite cool abut it when she heard our unfortunate outcome and we went on about our day.
Before leaving Mrytle Beach we figured it would be rude to leave the US without tasting someone of the fine cuisine in America's most popular bar - Hooters! Because we all know that the "food" is what everyone goes to Hooters for. After 2 hours of chicken wings, 1/2 pound burgers and fries we were done. Off to Washington DC.
DC worked out very well for us as we acquired a much needed break from the car and were put up for the weekend by our good friend Larrisa. Here we partied a bit (and some housemates became scarred for life! Sorry Hayes if ur reading) and worked out in the swankiest gym we've been to yet (for free!). Even treated ourselves to a shower and jacuzzi!
Oh not to forget seeing the 'White House', sending our regards to Mr Bush, touring Capitol Building, seeing the Capitol Monument, WW2 Memorial and catching our first baseball game at the Nationals Stadium. Unfortunately 'Washington Nationals' were beaten (just!) by the 'Texas Rangers'.
Next stop, Philadelphia. A great city, steeped in history and easy to get around. In Philly we learnt all about why we have Independence Day, the 'Constitution' and where to go for the best 'Philly Cheese Steaks' in town. The answer is 'Geno's'- a must do if u guys ever go to Philly. The free t-shirt he chucked in did not sway my decision whatoever. Oh, and we ran up the steps to the Art Museum-famous as they're the same ones Rocky ran up in training (u know that bit in the film).
From here we travelled North to Buffalo and Niagara Falls. Niagara Falls is breathtaking. And very very wet. We got up very close during a tour called the 'Maid of the Mist' and got a real taste of the falls. Imagine terrential rain in gale force winds! It was well worth it though. A little fact for you, 2 people have actually survived going over the horseshoe falls, 1 in a barrel and 1 just in speedo's! You learn something new everyday.
We spent the weekend just gone in Boston. I've always wanted to go to Boston and now I can say why. They have the coolest accents in the world ("Pahk Yah Cahr" and are some of the friendliest people you'll ever meet. Like Philly, the city is big but easy to explore. We walked the famous 'Freedom Trail' to learn all about how Americans faught off the British troops to gain freedom and why we celebrate the Boston Tea Party.
We also watched the Euro 2008 Finals and frequented some famous bars including 'Cheers' - where everybody knows your name, and the 'L Street Tavern' where 'Good Will Hunting' was shot. This morning we drove to Harvard University to see if we were Harvard material and catch a free tour of America's most famous University. Turns out I did not cut the mustard. Nice place though.
So, 10 days left in the big city before returning back to good ol' England. Off to check out some local Pizza in little Italy tommorow and then preparing for July 4th which I believe is kind of a big deal out here!
See u all next weekend (Sat 12th July) if your up for a few bevvies!
