We took the train from Ninh Binh to Hue (pronounced Hway) which was really exciting. We had "soft seat" tickets and although it took 12 hours to get to Hue it was a very enjoyable journey. We had loads of leg room, met a nice couple from New Zealand, were able to get up and smoke between the carriages and they even had food and drink carts every few hours. The scenery was amazing too, we saw lots more limestone mountains and went over some really pretty rivers. It was dark when we arrived at Hue so we quickly found a guesthouse and settled in for the night.
Hue is on the Perfum River and had a city feel due to the tall buildings and modern bridges and architecture along the riverfront. On the first day we spent most of our time looking round the citadel which was built in 1804, unfortunately most of the monuments were detroyed in the war but most of the cities population still reside within the 2 meter thick walls and it is very pretty. It was here that we realised a snack we've been munching on since Cambodia is actually lotus seeds, see pics! We walked around a lot of the town and went to the Ho Chih Minh museum late afternoon, interesting but not many captions in English!
We booked our bus to Hoi An for the following day and enjoyed our last night with some beers and a curry.
