After 6 hours on the bus from Phnom Penh with some amusing rest stops (see pics) we finally arrived in Kratie. It was nice to be out of the city again and Kratie reminded us of Battambang but much quieter. We checked in to our guesthouse for 2 nights and booked our ticket to Laos to leave on the 20th to be in another country for Gem's birthday.
As per normal the first night in Kratie was an early one to recover from the travelling. Kratie is on the Mekong River (something we will see a lot of over the next few weeks as it runs through Laos too). This part of the Mekong is famous for being home to over 50 Irrawaddy Dolphins (river dolphins). We wanted to see them so we booked a half day tour with the resident Tuk Tuk driver, "Lucky", at the hotel for the following day.
Our thoughts that Kratie was similar to Battambang were proved right on the Tuk Tuk ride to the dolphins, through various small villages where again everyone stopped to wave and shout hello or cheer as we drove by. We were taken to a boat and the guide took us out on the river where we were dolphin spotting for about an hour, they gather in certain areas as they are more shallow. In the dry season they move to a different place. It was a fantastic experience and we spotted about 20 dolphins (or the same one 20 times, who knows!).
On the driver back to Kratie we stopped at a temple with the obligatory 500 steps - see pics and spot Wally again...
We planned to watch England v Ukraine at 1.45am so another early night was on the cards with the alarm set for 1am. We had lunch that afternoon and managed to get some passport photos done for our visa for Laos, a funny experience with all 4 employees laughing at both photos as they were cutting them down to size on their computer! Thankfully we both managed to watch the game - great result on both counts but a tired day was ahead as we had bus tickets for Laos leaving at 7am.
We are sad to leave Cambodia, we have loved the culture, sights, cheap everything, amazing weather. Most of all though, we absolutely love the Cambodian people and we would recommend everyone to travel here.
