Lazy start to day woken by donkeys calling. Views just as stunning over the Lake. After breakfast braved the Inka steps back down the hill which was a lot easier then going up, to get the boat back to the mainland. The boats here are really slow and go at a crawl but everything slows down at altitude. Hot in the sun during the day but cold in shade so constantly carrying more layers. We left on the 10pm bus out of Cusco last night and tried to get some sleep through to our stop in Puno arriving before 5am. In Puno bus station we got our tickets to Copacabana in Bolivia and had breakfast, not a very exciting place to spend 3 hours before the 7.30am bus out. Woke up late. Compared to the last few days that is. We had booked into the same, very nice, hotel that we stayed in before leaving on the trek, and they'd told us the night before we could stay beyond check out time. We took full advantage of their generosity and awarded ourselves a luxurious lie-in. After just over 4 hours sleep we got up at 2.45am to try and catch a train to the next town but we missed it (we might not have got on anyway as a local train not for tourists), so we walked for 2 and half hours along the railway line mostly in the dark to the light of head torches to the bottom of the hill below Machu Picchu (with a packed breakfast from the guides). Another great wakeup call with hot drinks in tent. This morning's walk was downhill to lower altitude so felt better. We passed lots of children on the way, and women popped up selling gloves and other textiles. It had been mentioned that we might see children asking for sweets and we should instead stock up on pens etc to give them to use in school.
