So this is our first entry whilst out of the country, and so far we’ve visited 2 major cities in Canada, Toronto and Montreal.
We landed in Toronto on March 13th, from there we hopped on a bus which took us within walking distance of our first hostel, that being said it didn’t make it any easier finding it, as the first thing we did was walk for 4 blocks in the wrong direction. We asked for directions, and got no where, only when we decided to just walk the other way... did we eventually find it. First thing we did upon our arrival was dump our stuff, and went for a walk around the city.
Our first night was a jet lag recovery night. This was followed by an early morning, and greeting us downstairs were pancakes and tea. After pancakes, we decided to head over to the bus depot to try and sort out how on earth we were going to be getting to our destinations for the next 3 months. Our two options at this point were to buy a car or to get the bus. We pretty much decided to buy a ticket to Montreal there and then. The guy at the depot told us about a ticket that we could get to Vancouver, stopping at Sudbury, Thunder Bay, Winnipeg, Regina, Calgary and finally Vancouver. All for a little over 250 bucks, which is way cheaper than buying and insuring a car.
We spent the rest of Saturday wandering around Toronto, checking out the numerous china towns and going up the CN tower.
The CN tower was pretty awesome, it takes something like 52 seconds to get to the viewing platform in the lift which has glass panels in the floor so you can see straight down the lift shaft. Up at the viewing platform there are great views across the whole city and the lake, which is still frozen in the harbor. There’s a glass floor section which is freaky, you stand on it and it’s like your standing in mid air.
After the CN tower we headed back to the hostel and booked a trip to Niagara Falls for the next day. We decided to cook our own food in the communal kitchen, which turned out to be a pretty bad idea, I (matt) ended up being sick and spending the night on the toilet! (he doesn’t know it was our cooking for sure, I ate it and wasn’t sick so….)
The bus to Niagara picked us up at 9.30am-ish and started on the 90minute journey to the falls. Along the way we stopped off at a Niagara vineyard for a wine tasting, not exactly the best thing to do after a night with no sleep.
We sampled some of Ontario’s finest wines, which included and ice wine, which was the sweetest ‘alcoholic’ drink I have ever tasted.
The falls them selves were incredible, we had a walk around for a good few hours, taking pictures etc. and hopped back onto the bus, and finally arrived back at the hostel around 7.
Next day saw our 7 hour bus ride to Montreal.
