We were up next morning after night under the stars in the desert at half 6 as we were cold and damp because it only rained during the night, how random is that for a desert that hardly ever rains!!! We packed up our stuff and jumped into the sand buggies to head back to where the truck was so we could move onto our next stop on the trip Nasca!! Had a cool trip back to the base in these buggies well going up and down over the sand certainly woke us up! Had breakie then we all continued our journey to Nasca. On the way we stopped at the viewing tower, and we paid one sole (20p) to go to the top and view two of the famous Nasca Lines from here which was the hands and the tree, however, it was hard to get good pics as we werent high enough to get them all in. These Nasca lines are thought to have been drawn on the Pampa Colarado by three different groups, the Paracas people 900 - 200 BC, the Nasca people 200 BC - 600 AD and the settlers from Ayacucho at about 630 AD but these are all mostly by the Nasca people. The lines are caused by the darkstones being moved to reveal the white sand underneath. The main standing theory which was made by a German lady who devoted her life to studying them is that they are an ancient calendar but there are some alternatives, 1. that the Nasca people may have had hot air balloons and have been able to view them, 2. that they are ancient running tracks and 3. Aliens of course (100% of Japenese tourists think that it was Aliens haha!) We carried on our journey and reached our hotel at lunch time (after a quick stop to watch a local legend make his pottery in old Nasca style), we were all meant to be camping tonight but after our rough night in the desert alot of us upgraded into the rooms at the hotel which only cost us $5 and was well needed haha, hot showers and a comfy bed ahhhhh luxury. The hotel we were staying in was actually opposite the little airport where the planes take you for a half an hour trip over all of the Nasca lines. When we arrived we dropped off our stuff and me and Matt went off for our flight, Russ gave this a miss and chilled in the pool. We had to pay 10 soles airport taxes before we left on the plane which was a bit cheeky, but its only 2 quid so it wasn´t a huge deal. Then we took off I sat in the front next to the pilot and matt was behind me with a couple of others from our group. It was cool little trip but it was quite hard to see the lines at first but once you see them they´re cool, especailly the space man one and the spider, they were particulary amazing (hard to understand how they could have drawn them so well without seeing them from above like this). It was hard to take pics as the plane moved around quite quickly and you had to zoom to get a decent pic of them, but at least we got to see them with our own eyes which was the only way to really get a grip of how huge they are. Ten mins into the this trip I turned around to see Matt had gone green!!! It was quite stuffy in the plane and it was moving about quite alot so I knew how he felt, he was close to being sick but managed to hold back which was a good thing. The pilot realised how he was feeling and so he quickly showed us the rest and went into land after about 20 mins, I think all of us came off feeling rough and queasy but we are glad that we went up to have a look at what they are like from that height which was impressive. So after that little adventure we spent the afternoon just chilling out at the hotel in the room (which was mega lush with a comfy bed, nice shower and sky tv woo hoo), in the pool and took a little wander around the area but there wasn´t much around except a few little shops which I managed to buy stuff from oops a little bag and a poncho haha! They were really cheap honest!! It was the irish groups turn to cook and made everyone bangers and mash yum yum so good to eat that after alot of different foreign foods - a taste of home haha. Tonight was an early one as we were heading to a place called Puerto Inca the next day and me and Matt still werent feeling great from the flight, so went to the room and enjoyed the comfort of a nice bed and tv.
