Well we've stepped up the adrenalin levels quite a bit since last we spoke. We left you in a sleepy ski resort just outside Kaikoura and since then we've been up and down mountains in every conceivable fashion. We drove across to the west coast over the spine of the country. It was very wet and the roads had quite a few rockfalls and the occasional landslide which made for an interesting detour or two. We got to Greymouth but realised there wasn't a lot to do there so decided to carry on to Franz Josef, home of the aptly named Franz Josef glacier. En route we drove through gold-rush country, so we stopped off for a bit of prospecting. We had a reasonable amount of success, not enough to retire on, but enough for about half a penny sweet. If that. Safe to say Leanne was more successful than me, as it requires a certain amount of patience and deftness of touch, both of which i lack.
When we arrived in Franz Josef, we went to book a glacier tour. We were aiming to do the half day glacier walk, but as it was fully booked we went for the whole day. An 8 hour day, a 12km round trip, 500m up the glacier, and most of it wearing crampons (or clampons as Lenny is calling them). It was incredible. The weather was good, the guide was brill, told us loads about the glacier and where not to stand, I only fell over once (but it was in front of everyone and i slid quite a long way, about 5 ft, much to Leanne's amusement!!!!). Once we finished we crashed out. Totally knackered but really proud of ourselves. Next day we drove to Queenstown, which is where i'm currently writing this.
We've both just done a bungy jump from the top of the hill overlooking the town. It was fab. Once we had paid for our jumps, we were told that we would need to wait a couple of hours before the jump opened. Leanne thinks that this was the longest two hours of her life.... Once we got to the top of the jump, we got harnessed up and told that Leanne would be going first. Leanne then walked to the edge of the platform where she spent about 5 minutes telling the technician there that she couldn't jump. Anyway, after lots of reasoning and so many 'Oh my gods' from Leanne she finally threw herself off the side and as soon as she was hoisted up she decided to go again!!!! I had to sit there and watch her jump and jump as they make you jump in weight order from lightest to heaviest. Once she was done i still had to wait as there was a German fella who weighted nothing who got to go first. Fat Matt then had a couple of jumps (using the fatboy rope). Leanne is currently beaming from ear to ear and saying "I did it, I did it" to everyone she see's. I hope she doesn't get arrested. On the way back down the mountain we had a quick ride on the luge, I beat Lenny of course!
Next bit of adrenalin is a long overdue haircut for me. EXTREME BRO!!!!!!
(not allowed to upload photos at the mo. Loads to come soon hopefully. Will try again tomorrow)
