Well, since we last wrote we've done quite a few things... mainly sitting on an overnight sleeper train but more about that later!
On Valentines Day, we had a morning in Shanghai to ourselves so we just mooched about the city really, we took the subway underneath The Bund and had a look from the other side. It wasn't that exciting to be honest as it was a really hazy day and quite cold, nothing like the previous day when we had been walking around in t-shirts! We went to a really lovely bakery called 'Bread Talk' and had an extremely healthy breakfast of pastries and coffee! And we also brought some real bread (a lot of the Chinese bread we have tasted is very sweet so it was nice to taste some normal savoury bread!) for our epic train journey that afternoon. We also bought some other bits for the journey and met our group. When we got to the train station our train was delayed so we sat around there waiting for it (we managed to find an Italian place that sold sandwiches on focaccia bread - heaven!). When we got on the train it was the most run down train we had been on so far (see the photos in the Yangshao album!) and because the train was delayed it kept having to stop for faster trains to overtake it which delayed us even more!! We got the best sleep we have done so far on the sleeper trains as we were sharing with people from our group (luckily no snorers!) but it was still broken sleep and we woke up feeling groggy. Most of the day was spent sleeping, reading, playing cards or eating to pass the time. But we got through it (yay!) and then arrived at our destination. We then had to get a coach for an hour and a half to our accommodation - agggghhhhh! By this point we were so tired and felt dirty and horrible (obviously, no showers on sleeper trains only very dirty squat toilets which I have mentioned previously!).
We got to our accommodation, hillariously named 'Fawlty Towers' (we have been looking for Basil but there is no sign) whith a broken staircase up to reception which is a health and safety claim waiting to happen and had a quick shower before heading out in to Yangshao for dinner with the group. The place is really nice, just like a holiday destination and really laid back - much more than any of the other places we have been so far. We had a really lovely meal together (veggie burger and chips for me and steak for MG!) and then headed back to Fawlty Towers for some well deserved sleep!!
