after the longest set of flights from bali to singapore to darwin then onto to cairns we had finally arrived in oz, it was around 6am the sun was beaming and we were happy to have the ground under our feet again. first port of call was wot we had both been missing so much, a good brekkie, so we found the closest cafe to our hotel and had a big fat dirty full english breakfast, it was great, but looking down at my empty plate after i knew the weight id lost over south east asia was going to come striaght back and then some! australia is not the place to come if ur on a diet the food is great. as we had been travelling for nearly 24 hours with no sleep a now having stuffed our faces we decided to sleep through that day to try and catch up a bit, we woke up later that evening and went out for a "quiet few beers" it didnt quite turn out that way, we bumped into a lad we had met in thailand and had made a few other friends at the bar that night too so there was a crowd of us we got so smashed on cheap jugs of beer and jagerbombs which are shots with redbull, it was a sick night but a quality way to start our oz tour. next day was a complete write off erin was on deaths door with the hangover from hell she couldnt move out of bed only if she was running to the toilet to be sick and she was shaking like a s***ting dog, i didnt help the matter by making fake vomiting noises next to her in bed, but it was all good we had made a new group of friends and seen cairns nightlife, pj's tha woolshed and rhinobar. next day we just sunbathed around the lagoon and booked our greyhound ticket to go down the coast and a trip up to cape tribulation for the next day. Next morning was an early one we had to be up for our trip pick up at7 7:30 wot a rut! on the trip we went on a boat ride down the daintree river looking for wildlife and it wasnt long before we came across a huge crocodile just lying on the bank his name was scarface and he was around 6m long, we got the boat up close these animals are mean looking when u see them in real life and the driver said there has been loads of deaths on the daintree over the last few years with crocs eating people who either get a bit too close to the edge or one stupid woman who got pissed and went for a swim, never to be seen again? apparently a 12m crocodile was spotted in rockhampton which is one of our stops down the coast, so if u dont see any blog updates after that point u will know why! also on the trip we went to some wicked lookout points over the coastline and into the rainforest itself then up to cape tribulation beach which was beautiful, got to watch out for the old jellyfish though they are a big problem down to around brisbane!
day after cape tribulation we were off on our scuba diving trip on the great barrier reef we had booked onto a liveaboad boat which constantly stays out on the reefs so u had to get a transfer from the harbour out to the boat around 3 hours away to the reefs. our package was we had paid for our 1 night 2 day diving trip and had the option to stay on after this as "hosties" which basically means they have u doing jobs around the boat during the day but u get ur accomadation free and ur meals and 3 dives a day, one early morning dive one afternoon dive and a night dive, so we thought that was quite sweet. all in all we were a bit dissappointed with the great barrier reef we got to see loads off cool stuff like rays and turtles and giant maori wrasse all up close and also loads of sharks which were everywhere, they were amazing! on our first ever night dive we went diving over a reef called hastings it was a scary experience it is pitch black under the water and all u have to see with is a little torch so we were flapping it a bit once we got in, when we found the reef we started to scan about with our torches for fish and the first thing that we saw was a bloody massive shark cruising around, u can spot sharks easy with ur torch because their eyes shine green if the torch light catches them! anyway this was a really cool thing to see sharks are attracted to light at night so they swam up really close to us and just turned away at the last minute i thought this was great but as i turned round to give erin a big thumbs up i saw the look of complete horror on her face and the faintest smell of poo seeping out of her wetsuit! all in all with all the diving and living on the barrier reef for 4 days it was an amazing experince and the sight of our first wild shark is one we will both never forget! we headed off back to cairns from the boat for our final evening there before we head off down the coast! good times!
