Well time for another update, I cant believe the last time I wrote anything I was still in Sihanoukville! And I have finally uploaded pictures to the internet, where they can be found on my facebook page. I have literally spent hours uploading hundreds of pictures so I dont want no more complaining!!
Anyway, when we left Sihanoukville we travelled by bus to Siem Reap home to the famous Angkor Wat temple. To be honest I didnt know much about this place but I was very excited to get to look around as from all the pictures it looked spectacular. So we checked into our hotel on arrival and spent the day walking around the town before going out for dinner in the evening. Most of us had an early night as we were planning to get up early the next day (5am) to get to the temple for the sunrise, however some decided to stay out and they didnt exactly feel amazing in the morning ha. Anyway, the next day everyone was up at 5am ready to head to Angkor Wat for the sunrise and it was pretty amazing to see. If anyone wants to see pictures they are on my facebook profile as this website is crap for uploading pictures. So we spent most of the day being guided around the temples and monuments taking hundreds of pictures and we finished up watching the sunset at another temple 40 minutes drive away fom Angkor Wat, but still part of the same temple system. Later on that night we went for dinner and the as usual, standard drinks at a bar ingeniously called "Angkor, Wat?".
The next day we left to head to Bangkok in Thailand where our tour with Intrepid finished, but we went out in style with the Thai new year raging full on in the streets with water fights and white powder being flung around everywhere! Unfortunately, even though the riots had 'finished' there was still a lot of unrest and police presence, and as we were walking back past the road we had had dinner down hundreds of people suddenly started running towards us. So everyone else immediately stopped to see what was going on and at first everyone thought there had been a fight in the street, but it turned out to be much worse as someone had decided to pull out a gun and try and shoot people partying in the street. So immediately our tour guide, (the legend that is Thou!) yells at us to leg it back to the hotel, where we end up staying for the rest of the night and having a few drinks in our rooms.
So that signalled the end of the trip, but most of the group were staying on in Thailand for a few weeks so we didnt all say goodbye, whilst some went down to the south islands, myself and a few others stayed in Bangkok and I got to meet up with some fellow volunteers from Nepal who were also in Bangkok, which was cool. So there were about 4 of us staying in Bangkok from the intrepid group and we did a lot of sightseeing, going to the Floating Market, elephant riding, to the Tiger Temple and the Grand Palace. It was pretty good to see the tigers and the Grand Palace was very impressive and shiny (pics all on facebook)! Besides the sightseeing there really isnt much else to do in Bangkok except drink. Drink and party. Then drink some more. And not just drink from a cup, oh no, you drink from buckets in Bangkok. Well, one night I had a bucket too many and I was staggering around like a drunken fool, but then so is everyone else so you really dont think your that drunk. In fact, if a sober person walks past you, you think they're drunk because they're walking funny compared to the rest of you. But anyway, the next day I woke up and my door was wide open, I was lying on top of my bed naked and wondering what the hell had happened.
A couple of days after bucket night, I flew to Singapore early in the morning. Having only spent one night at the airport in Singapore, I guess my conceptions about the place weren't really grounded in anything realistic. Like money! Lets just say that its not wise to come here on a budget... The other night I had my big splash on food and one beer, a single solitary beer, cost £7. You might be thinking, well at least it was probably a decent sized premium beer that you can only buy in Singapore. Well, no. It was Tiger and it was a 330ml sized bottle. So yes, I think its safe to say that I havent really drank anything whilst here, and another thing that's been rather strange is that recently my hands have been shaking, and they never used to do that whilst I was on the Intrepid tour, guess its because my body is withdrawing from something... haha.
Anyway, today is my last day in Singapore and have done a couple of touristy things, like doing the night safari, botanical gardens and the city tour, but after spending four months soaking up the culture of asia, Singapore really doesnt hold a light to the other places. I was particularly disgusted at the night safari, never before has something been so utterly cheesy and designed for rich overweight foreigners. The 'night safari', is basically a 30 minute ride on a tram through a man made jungle with specific parts all designed to look like different regions of the world, so we had an African jungle, the Nepalese Himalayas, tropical Asia and more, but rather strangely... they all looked the same! WOW! And I had the most ANNOYING commentator on the tram ride, she would come up with bits of gold dust like "And to our right we can see some long grass, where rhino's can sometimes hide --(there were no rhinos in this grass, and no way could they hide in it)--, which makes you think... what... else... could... be... lurking... in... the... grass..." and another one was when we drove through a 'river' which was more like a puddle of water in the road where she kindly informed everyone to keep their hands in the vehicle because of the crocodiles in the water. So, not too impressed with that attraction, but I suppose it is more aimed at young children and gullible foreigners.
So anyway, thats all I have for now, tomorrow I fly out to Sydney to meet one of my mates from Nepal and then I'm meeting some friends from the Intrepid group where we will begin our tour of Australia for the next two months!
