Hello everyone!
We have been majorly lame in updating this of late so thought it was about time.....
Ok so we left Auckland and travelled to our next destination which was Singapore. We arrived on a Sunday evening and managed to somehow negotiate the metro system (not that hard really) and get off at the right stop. Our hostel was in Little India and it turns out that Sundays are the night for all the folk to hang out there - it was SOOOOOO SO SO busy! Quite an eye opener. We did get a little lost whilst wondering around but eventually got to the hostel. We were both more than a little mardy as we were so hot and sweaty!! I have never known heat like it - the humidity was crazy! We got ourselves checked in and sotred and most importantly FED and all was good.
We stayed 3 days in Singapore and did loads of wondering around and sight seeing. Basically saw the main touristy things...Raffles hotel (very posh), war memorial, bit of shopping - mainly because we needed the air con!! We saw some really cool temples and looked around China town and Little india etc. Oh and we spent a day at the zoo - which was excellent!! Saw some really cool animals, think the faves were the big cats, elephants and giraffes. Rather than being all fenced in the animal enclosures have 'natural' barriers - so moats and things like that, seemed to work pretty well and they looked very well looked after. We very much enjoyed our time here - its clean and easy to get around and the food is ace!
After our few days here we went to got a 5 hour bus journey to Kula Lumpur in Malaysia. That was also a bit of an experience!! We arrived at what was basically a random bus station on the worlds busiest street... we decided that it was prob best if we got a taxi to our hostel here as we would have got SO lost - and we were right! Taxi was cheap though, and the hotel ended up being pretty good. Although we will never be staying in a 14 person dorm ever again! Very hard to get sleep when there are always people coming in and out of the room.
We saw some really cool things in KL - including the Petronas towers and the skytower. Also went to a really really cool market in China town and grabbed a bargain (fake) gucci purse! KL is very much a dirty smoggy asian city though, so we probably wouldn't be returning here again. Nice to say we have been though.
Ended up staying in KL longer than we wanted as we had to fly into Thailand (its a visa thing - is boring so wont explain here!) - so had to change plans. Didnt make it to Langkawi in Malayasia in the end, and flew straight into Phuket in Thailand.
We flew with air asia on the cheap - and although it wasnt the airlines fault - the flight was terrifying!! VERY bumpy and there were people screaming and everything! NOT the best but thankfully it was only about an hour long.
Phuket is a major tourist destination but is still pretty cheap to be there so we had three days in a (very bizzarre) guesthouse. Basically chilled our boots and laid on the beach (which was ok but a little dirty which was disappointing), caught up on washing and admin etc and then got a transfer to the other side of Thailand to Ko Samui - where we are now!
Ko Samui is lovely - gorgeous long beach and lots happening which is good. Plenty of bars snd restaurants, and even found somewhere to watch the Lions games which is a bonus (esp for Mat). Though we do keep drinking too much Chang beer and feeling rather crappy the morning after! On well - its their fault its soooooo cheap! haha. Oh and a note of amusement for you all - we took a wrong turn last night to a street of 'Girly bars' - although i dont think there were many girls there if you know what i mean!! We turned around very quickly and almost ran away! The safety of the local Irish bar - Tropical Murphys was welcome!!
Here for a few more days then heading on to Kanchanaburi, then Chiang Mai and Bangkok...... then HOME!! Booooooo..... So thats all for now - having problems uploading photos coz the computers here are slow as you like and they dont like our memory cards etc.... and the stupid Thai women who run this place seem to think we have broken them. So we will do them another time so as not to incur their wrath any further!
Byes xx
