Its Christmas!
The timing meant that I spent this day, christmas eve halfway up some Inka mountain! When I booked this trip Machu Pichu was one of the things I really wanted to see. I dont really even know why. Its just mysterious I guess. I had not taken into account how hard a 4 day trek up a mountain at great altitude would mean either.
So I am walking on my own today the group are going at there own pace. I take a few steps and stop to breathe. The porters all of which carry 25kilos and are twice my age are lapping me. "vamos , vamos" he says . I am about to give up and am fighting back tears when past the mist I hear cheers and I reach the summit of ' Dead womans pass' the highest point.
Day 3. my fragile stomach is worse and there is a lack of convieniences half way up a mountain! I get rehydration powder ,grose! I am feeling at my physical end, it seems to go on forever then finally we reach the pi esta resistance of camps! I am sat showered with beer in hand on Christmas day in a beautiful place in the mountains. I miss home and Christmas but we make do with some beers and exchange presents under the gas lamp as it pours down outside.
Last day, with wet feet. Somewhere I get a final burst of energy and climb the almost vertical steps to the sun gate and the first glimse of the lost city.
It truly is magical and I feel privaledged to be here. It has a strange and lovely atmosphere.
So we take the tour I am so tired I can hardly stand up. I get chased by the resident llama!
I am knackered, aching and still a bit sick but I guess you should feel like that on boxing day!
