Hey all, finally we have found a computer that agrees with Star travel! Following a lazy few weeks in Martiniscruro and San Menaio on the Eastern coast of Italy we drove accross the country to Pompeii. During our week long stay here we spent a day going around the ruins of ancient Pompeii, an amazing expreience if a little eerie, the streets and building are intact enough to really get a sense of what the town looked like. We also visited Herculaneum, a smaller and much better preserved ancient site destroyed by the same eruption a pompeii. Funniest part of the day was hearing an old American women fart tremondously!! On the Monday we wandered around Naples and visited the Museum of Archeology, a little confusing but very interesting. Naples was a very interesting city, noisy, dirty and seemed a very poor place to live but it had a strange attraction to it and i wouldnt be adverse to visiting again for a day. The tuesday was Vesuvius and my personal highlight of the week, the walk up the volcano was a bit long but the views from the top over the bay of Naples and into the crater made the trek worth it, both got photos with saints shirts at the top! Best pizzas by far were at the campsite, made by an old Italian called Vincenzo, been doing it for years, best ive tasted! We left Pompeii and headed for Rome where we would be joined by Tara and Russ. We arrived a day early to set up camp and get our barings and left the campsite the following moring early to meet them at the airport, all went smoothly and by lunchtime on we were all by the pool, me and Russ burgers in hand! The Saturday and Sunday were spent in Rome, we got the bus from the campsite and it dropped us of at flaminio metro station in the north of the city within easy reach of the main sites. Thesaturday was spent visiting the Colloseum which was amazing, the Pantheon and Russ and I went to the Trevi Fountain while Tara and Ash went to find their hotel. The Sunday we went back to the Trevi fountain after meeting up with Ash and Tara, visited the Spanish steps and went to the Vatican, sadly most of it was closed due to a religious fesival. Ash, Russ and Tara then decided to head home as it was really to hot for sight seeing and wanted the pool while i decided to brave the heat and do abit of filming. Managed to visit a few more sights, went back to the pantheon, the mausoleum of Augustus and a music shop to purchase a Radiohead album. On my way back to the bus i bumped into three rather tired travellers who failed to get back to the salvation of the pool due to ridiculous train prices. The momday was spent by the pool and then dropping Tara off at the airport before heading off to Nice to collect Em, Russ was still with us and due to fact he has been part of our logest road trip to date is officially the third member of Mash2008 (something for the c.v russ!). The drive was about 7 hours so Ash drove untill about 5 in the morning before we stopped off in a service station outside Monaco for afew hours before going to collect Em at around 10 am. After checking in and setting up camp we went straight to the beach in Antibes to spend the afternoon and got an early night before heading into Nice the following day where EM and I were booked into our hotel and Ash and Russ wanted to explore the city. Nice has been one of the best cities so far, busy but really laid back with the old part of the town a warren of shops selling everything from Ice cream to underwear! Deffinately somewhere to come back to. The following day myself and Em explored a bit more of nice and ate a fair bit of pizza at the marina in Antibes while Ash and Russ went to Marineland and Aquasplash and by the sounds of it had an amazing time. After one more night and a fairly quiet morning it was back to Nice airport to say our goodbyes to Russ and Em, Taxi to go 20 mins cost us 55 euros but the bus back cost us1 euro each! I know write to you from St Tropez where we arrived this morning, so far so good. Its fair to say that even though the week with the grls passed by so quickly and although its been pretty tough saying goodbye, both Nice and Rome will be a major highlight of the whole trip for us. Pics soon. Mash2008 xx
P.S RUSS CLASSIC:- Upon entering the sea in Antibes Russ suddenly realises he has left his wallet in his pocket, turning to Ash to some up this realisation, he summed himself up with 'God Im such a f***ing Dick!'. Much laughter insued. Cheers Russ.
