Mary's Travels
I did another day trip, this time to Luxembourg. We got there at 10am, and wandered around until we finally found the tourist office (we got split up from the group thanks to a red light). We got some info, then went to a bookstore, then to the Chocolate House. YUM. I got a praline hot chocolate and a chocolate mousse cake. Wow. I was counting lent as over at this point, but I definitely overdid the chocolate after being chocolate-sober for so long. Oh it was good. Then we went and got lunch, couldn't stop eating, and I got a really good ham, cheese, and pineapple panini with fries. Yum. Then I went to catch a walking tour as my friends went to a museum. The tour was pretty good, and it was a beautiful day. I learned a lot about Luxembourg, but mainly it's just been in the middle of a tug-of-war game between Germany and France. The French side dominated though after all the years, and you can tell by everything being written in French before being written in Luxembourgish and English. And yes, Luxembourgish is what you call the language. The people are called Luxembourgers. Kind of sounds like "burgers" at the end haha. The tour started out at a church that's being renovated, then we went to the former fish market where French fishermen would sell their products. Then we went to the city walls which offered breathtaking views. It was extra nice in the sun :) Then we checked out some more official buildings, there were so many, with it being a democracy with a monarchy, along with trying to be the capital of the EU, there was a lot of official stuff. Then we headed over to a castle with a really famous bridge I was looking forward to seeing. But the bridge was being renovated :( that was a bummer. Then we headed back into the main square and I met up with my friends again. We went to another plaza to hear some traditional music and see some traditional dancing. That was neat. Then we went back to the city walls to admire the view some more, then went down to the Lower City (on the other side of the wall) in search of some dinner. We finally found a place, and got simple sandwiches. Then we rushed back to the center of town, picked up another hot chocolate, then headed out to the bus. We took a different way back and got to walk through some of the city's gardens, which were really beautiful. We were proud of ourselves for making it back in time, and we enjoyed the rest of our hot chocolate as we pulled away. Overall great day in Luxembourg, I think the weather had something to do with it, but it was a really nice and interesting town with a lot of beauty and not a ton of obnoxious tourism.
