Last night was our last night abroad for this trip, our ferry sails from Cherbourg this evening. In view of the late arrival in Poole we stay in bed until 10:30. hoping to 'timeshift' our day.
It's sunny when we set off at midday pasing through Granville and into the countryside of La Manche. More flooding and green crops surround the little stone hamlets we pass through before reaching Coutances. We stop at a supermarket in Lessay to top up with cheap diesel and buy sandwiches for later.
Reaching Cherbourg traffic is not as busy as last time and we pull into the visitors area to sort out everything for boarding. The wheelchair is converted to manual and stowed inside, passports out of the safe, a flask of boiling water for our journey after disembarking, turn off the gas cylinder. It is while boiling the kettle Ali discovers a bottle of cooking oil has spilt in the cabinet. Not happy having to clean that up!
Check in and boarding mv Barfleur go smoothly but surprisingly, given all the backlog of sailings, there are not many travelling. Perhaps one third capacity.
Our meals from self service were of decent quality and whiled away some time, as did the appallingly slow onboard internet.
After all the weather concerns and rescheduling, the crossing is smooth and arrives on time. By 22:00 we have cleared Border Control and are heading through Poole on the left side of the road.
There are a few showers along the way but generally our journey goes well. We reach Honiton and stop in a layby for coffee then continue with the knowledge that it is all dual carriageway from here on. There is liittle traffic, mostly lorries, but every layby has one or more lorries camped down. The temperature varies from zero to two degrees and Snoopy shows our time to arrive Penryn as 02:20, too late, but we make it to Sourton services which is full of trucks and one other motorhome. We are parked and in bed just before 1:00 a.m. as yet another grand tour nears its end.
When we brought Mary*Lou along this road in November 2012 we didn't know how far we would go in her. During today's journey, forty months later, we clock up our 25,000th mile, enough to have gone once around the globe.
Not a bad thought as we nod off in our favourite truck stop.
