Beautiful sunrise across the vines but it is only 3 deg C. Ali and Grete go to the farm shop and return with some wine, plus a free, almost full, tasting bottle for the drivers to try later.
We start out on narrow hilly country roads with spectacular scenery. Along the way we admire the Christmas decorations in the towns and villages; Viella with silver trees and a life sized santa sitting at a restarant's terrace table with his dinner; in Aire sur l'Ardour large shiny bows are tied to bridge railings and a large white tree in the centre. It's all simple but very attractive, all shining in the sunshine.
The Nicks get their Christmas treat, a stop in a Lidl's car park.
The temperature rises as we near the coast, and as we drive through busy Bayonne and Biarritz it reaches 21 deg C. A few miles on we reach St Jean de Lutz but the aire we planned stop at is full. A real shame as the town looks really attractive.
We head along a pretty coastal drive towards Hendaye. The number of Mo-Ho's heading the other way make us worry that the next aire is also full. We find it and there is space, it's an unattractive location but at least we could park. On the way here Grete has remembered a large camperstop '10 minutes down the road'. At first we are reluctant to move on, we've had a long drive so far and getting tired, but she is certain there will be room there so we leave Hendaye and cross the border into Spain. The drive is more like half an hour due to new one-way systems, and a malfunction with the radios means our grumbles and worreies about lack of space are overheard [oops!], but when we arrive in Hondarribia there is indeed loads of space and it's a good location between beach and marina.
We have a wander into town then get back to find there is a good wi-fi hotspot as well.
For supper we indulge in a fatboy breakfast as there is rarely time to have one in the mornings, and egg and bacon go so well with free red wine.
