We drove to Madrid to collect Lynne and Mal from the airport on Friday. They brought some British weather with them, but we still had a great day exploring. The Royal Palace was breathtaking, but having not been redecorated for 200 years we felt IKEA style had bypassed the spanish Royal Family, though they don't live there any more, or at least not in the public rooms. It seemed much grander than Buckingham Palace.
Yesterday we took Mal & Lynne to see 'Guernica' in the Reina Sofia, a bit of culture before we sat in a pavement cafe in the sun. The bus was packed in the morning, we were taking bets on how many more the driver would cram on, and at some point someone dipped Andy's pocket and took his phone. At least, we think that's what happened, as we got off the bus and spotted an exhibition on the new Euro notes in the Banco de Espana. Being a bank, we had to go through airport-style security to get in, and Andy couldn't find his phone. His penknife was confiscated, but unlike at an airport, he was allowed it back when we went out.
We didn't allow this to spoil our day as thought there was a chance he'd left it in the hotel. The railway station in Madrid is amazing, a must-see -I'll post some more photos when I get proper wifi.
Sadly, our boat trip on the Duoro River in Portugal has been cancelled due to the amount of rain there. The locks have been closed and the lakes are incredibly high, so cruising the picturesque gorges and lakes will have to keep for another time. Probably no great loss, since the weather there is atrocious, and the boat had no heating.
Tomorrow plan B kicks in, and we head south for some sun. Today we're off to the famous Rastro market, hoping to stay dry and do less walking than yesterday!
