The first few days in Kolkata have been noisy colourful and interesting. The streets are filled with food stalls and stands selling everything from shoes and clothes to votive flowers to what looked like imitation guns. Maybe they were real!
Kolkata is not the most beautiful of cities but it does have some attractively tumbledown colonial buildings from the days when it was the capital of the British raj. The exception is the Victoria Memorial (photo attahed) which is well loved by Kolkatans and set in large grounds in the maidan. An area cleared after the black hole incident apparently.
The oddest incident was being offered the keys to a Royal Enfield bike I was admiring, even after I tried to explain I'd never ridden a motorbike. Not sure what would have been more dangerous, the traffic or me on a bike.
Off to Darjeeling on an overnight train tomorrow night to, hopefully, somewhere a tad more serene.
