Flew to Bangladesh on Wednesday going from Kolkata to Dhaka and then an internal flight to Sylhet. Judging by the number of selfies taken on the flight it was either a lot of people's first flight or at least a special one. It was the start of a 3 day holiday to celebrate the end of durga puja which seems to be the main festival in Bengal. It consists of communities each making their version, in painted clay, of the goddess durga vanquishing the demon Mahishasura. This is the centrepiece of 4 days of celebration and then the statue is put in a river or other water body.
It was pretty lively last night in Sylhet with the statues being driven in flat bed trucks to the river amid a cacophony of horns and music.
Great food in sylhet - had a really tasty tandoori platter for one meal and a delicious aloo matter tomato with garlic naan for another. It was just like being in Brick Lane!
For some reason there appear to be scales in every hotel room in Bangladesh. I've not noticed the general population being overweight - maybe I'm missing something .

Pauline Ridges Presumably they take note of what the scales tell them! It all sounds great - and really worthwhile. Continue to enjoy.
