BACK IN THE GAME! Today we discovered trams right on our doorstep which took us all the way to Fisherman's Wharf, fantastic, wish we'd discovered that before we headed out the other day, still, we were rather excitable as we boarded the tram! Man, its awesome!!! We headed over to pier 33, to try to make up an excuse as to why we missed our ferry to Alcatraz yesterday ( erm... our train got delayed... ) , minutes later, we'd got through the stand-by queue and were headed for the prison!
What an amazing place, i've took loads of pictures, still trying to find somewhere to upload them, but we took the audio tour which is a must, talks you through the prison and all the many escape stories such as fake heads in beds to confuse the guards as the convicts made their way to freedom! One shocker is I thought only the touchend criminals ended up in the "ROCK" but no, from Bank Robbers to Thives! A bit harsh! I stepped into solitary confinement rooms, **** they were scary! Glad to get out, but still an experience!
Guards families lived on the island ( left their front doors unlocked ) And is was just like a small town...! The prison was only open for 30 years, but such criminals like Al Capone were held captive there! Even today, there was an ex-convict in the gift shop signing his book...! He didn't look too mad...!
All in all, a great day, and not too tired... just waiting for the pool tournament to start, going to kick butt....!
Tomorrow meeting up with a mate I met on a cruise this new year!
And not to make you all even more jealous, we're nipping on a last minute Independance Day cruise to Mexico! High Five!
On the way back, we took the tram, but this time holding on to the side of the tram, one of the coolest things i've ever done! Video to upload....!
I'm off to shoot some pool....!
