We were reunited on Sunday the 15th of February in Phnom Penh. It's safe to say we were both pretty excited at the airport. We spent our first night at Martha's sister's apartment, where Martha had already been staying for four days. But first thing Monday morning we got on a bus down south to Kampot. After trying a few of the places by the river, we found one with a bungalow available. These are the best places to stay in Kampot: quiet, idyllic spots right on the Mekong. They're rather hard to leave once you arrive, so we spent a while just relaxing by the river and Sofia had a quick swim. We eventually wandered in to Kampot to explore and watch the sunset.
The next day we went down to Kep, about a forty minute tuktuk ride away. Here we just relaxed on the beach and had lunch (and both got a bit sunburnt). We made it back to Kampot in time for a sunset cruise. Despite the fact that the boat's motor sounded like it might give up at any minute, it was a quiet and beautiful trip and on the way back we stopped to watch the fireflies. After dinner we suddenly realised it was pancake day so wandered around Kampot until we found some - being on the other side of the world won't stop us celebrating!
On Wednesday we went back to Phnom Penh, where we are now. We've done a bit of sightseeing and experienced one of the main temples at its busiest because of the Chinese New Year. We also visited the Tuol Sleng Genocide museum, the main prison during the Khmer Rouge Regime. The buildings have remained almost untouched for thirty years and contain photos of those who were imprisoned there. After this we made our way through the backstreets to the Russian Market, which unfortunately for Sofia (who hadn't seen it yet) was shut for Chinese New Year.
Tomorrow we leave for New Zealand!
