"Let's hire a car and have a relaxing drive aorund Viti Levu!", we thought to ourselves. Well, we hired a car, which turned out really cheap and the drive to Suva, the main town in Fiji was beautiful. After a heavy downpour, we continued our road trip only to encounter the scariest roads I have ever seen in my life-no exaggeration! Roadworks have just started on this 40km stretch. Something we were completely unaware of. We had to cross a few incredibly dodgy looking wooden bridges on our way. Not to mention passing cliffs with 'falling rocks' warning plastered around. I have nothing but praise for Matthew, who battled through this stretch with Bonnie (our car) for a monster four hours or so. It certainly kept me, Liz and Carol wide awake in the passanger seats. The scenery was too amazing to describe, but consisted mainly of lush green mountains and crystal clear seas on little beaches. We passedthrough dozens of tiny villages full of tin huts and passed lots of very friendly people walking on the roadside.
There were two main stops along the way. A night in Mango Bay resort, where it rained and we were visited by around 20,000 frogs, which were very difficult to dodge in the dark! I like frogs. Our beds were like something you would see in a film out in complete wilderness in a little hut. Not as many insect bites as I was expecting! It was like paradise though and the sea was full of thousands of fishes in a sort of lagoon created as the waves krept closer to shore. The second night was spent on Voli Voli Beach after the monster drive. Once again, it was beautiful. Lots of millipedes this time. Even in Matts bed.
We arrived back in Nadi a couple of hours ago and I have just woken from a much needed nap. Tonight is the final night before our two week stretch on the islands, where there will be limited electricity and no hot water. Bring it on!!
Hope everyone is well. Keep your messages coming! See you all in about two weeks!
