Bleep bleep bleep, the 5am wake up call sounded painfully attacking my senses. I slowly rose from my cozy bed now the perfect temperature to head for the oh so awakening shower. 30 minutes later, carrying two large packs I was the last to arrive at the rendezvous my car limping across the moist early morning school yard gushing the engines life fluid as it protest to a complete stop. my intrepid team were packed and ready to go.
William our American Bro the instigator of our torture, Shona DofE Bronzer, Fran&Co make team Germany, and the mountain duo Terry@Kev, and finally yours truly...the scene set.... We depart.
1400m the target all pretty much straight up. Our super heroes set off at a sturdy pace attacking the skirt of the mountain, our spirits high and elation was in the air, 20mins later it had evaporated as quickly as the morning Sunshine. The heavens opened and we were caught exposed on the mountain, waterproof jacket went on immediately as well as goretex trousers. I now look like a giant jelly baby but we keep going, pushing through the burning lactic acid build up. We reach our next challenge of fording a cascading waterfall with a 100 sheet drop, we surge through armed with Scottish tablet and licarice twists. After another two hours we scale the summit into the freezing air.
It is like we are on the moon. The highest point in the Uk is completely surrounded by fog, giving and eerie out of this world feeling. I'm sweating from my waterproof layers refracting my body heat back at me but dare not take off at top in the freezing mist, I unstopper my hip flask and toast the mountain with kev over a fine ardbeg! The skies the limit. William summits about 10minutes later with the remainder of our group shortly after.
We then descend at rocket speed!!!! "This time im riding down with the big dogs" William has joined us at the front of our little group as we commence what can only be described as a controlled free fall down the moment...
