I suppose it was only a matter of time… without electricity, internet, TV, or radio, other forms of entertainment were required. Around camp there are a number of Tamboti trees (Spirostachys Africana) - a medium sized deciduous tree. In terms of uses, then its wood is prized for furniture making, but other than that it has few uses. The leaves contain a poisonous latex, its smoke is poisonous when burnt, even if you avoid the smoke if you've used the wood when cooking then you'll become ill from eating food that was cooked over the fire. All mammals tend to avoid the tree and its fruit, except for Black Rhino and Porcupine who are unaffected by it. The fruit resemble a small green nut, a bit smaller than a peanut and the Grey Moth lays its eggs within the fruit. In time, the fruit drop to the ground and the lava of the moth become active within the fruit causing the fruit to jump around on the ground - hence the alternative name for the Tamboti - the jumping bean tree.
So the rules of the game are quite simple - each person collects a tamboti bean, and writes their number on the bean. Each player then puts 1 Rand into the kitty. A circle is drawn in the sand and the beans are placed in the centre of the circle - first bean to jump its way out of the circle wins and the winner collects the kitty…
