So we've moved on and on. Got a bit worried about the distance we had to cover before we pick up the Harley so off we went at high speed with a list of stuff we didn't want to miss. Dragged Mark around the Shaker village at Canterbury, actually he was secretly quite interested but kept muttering about fishing just for effect. It was a really lovely place, they had a good philosophy generally but celibacy was never going to catch on was it?
After this I asserted my need for a day on the beach and to get an agreement on this had to agree to our first night in the tent! Arrived at Hampton, fairly touristy but great beeches, and found a campsite. Set up tent with minimum arguing (due mainly to the audience of jovial Americans). It was a little disconcerting to find that Mark had bought a single airbed (they call them twins here for some reason so I forgave him) All was looking good till dusk when a cloud of mozzies decided that our camp was definately the least defended on the site. An early night followed swiftly. Sleep, don't be silly, on a single airbed, with a tent full of mozzies and the fact that the loos were a half mile hike. This was not helped by the bloke next door chopping up firewood at 1 am! Mark keeps saying we must give it another try. Now how likely do we think that is?
The beach was a welcome relief if only to get some sleep! Dozed the day away and set off that night for Boston. The plan was, a hotel, a shower and a nice meal BUT when we got to Boston we couldn't get a hotel. Didn't want to miss it so parked up, did a quick transformation from beach bum to slightly less scruffy beach bum in the car, piled out and then I found Barry. Now if I wasn't so devoted to my husband I might just have married Barry at that point! He came flying out of an office building and bumped into me, apologised and asked us how we were liking his city. So we told him of our lack of a hotel and asked his advice on how to see Boston in 2 hours. He proceeded to take us on a guided tour for an hour, recomended the best places to eat and told us where we would find a hotel. We had a great time from then on. Fantastic seafood, jazz bands on the harbour, found a hotel and spent the next day exploring. Loved Boston it is a really attractive city with a great energy.
From there we headed to Mystic Seaport. Booked into a lucious hotel with a huge breakfast (still making up for the camping experience) and spent the whole next day at the seaport. Mystic was fantastic. It is described as the Museum of America and the Sea and it really captures this. Huge lofty sailing ships, whaling boats, sea shantys being sung and great demonstrations of whaling etc, a good day.
Drove in shifts the next day to cover some major milage and have spent the last two days doing some of the famous civil war trail. Gettysburg has a fantastic cylorama experience which has improved our dismal knowledge of the civil war no end and somehow really helped get a handle on America and her people a little better. Visited some of the battle fields which is a sobering experience and then moved south to Harpers Ferry. This is a small historic town on the junction of the Potomac and the Shenandoah Rivers. Huge rivers. We have spent today lazing. Drifted around the sights then collapsed by the river. All was going well till Mark spotted fish, huge fish. The hunt was on, back to the car we went for the tackle, and spent the next hour looking for the perfect spot! God I'm getting patient! He did catch two (honest) but having seen the size of what could potentially be dangling from his rod these were released to grow a bit bigger and the battle continued into the evening. I am glad to report the fishies won. I really didn't fancy eating 15lbs of fish for tea. My Wendy's chicken ceaser salad was yummy.
Off to begin the Skyline Drive through the Shenandoah National Park. More next time...
