Ok we didn't actually see a moose yet but we are feelin it and it will happen we are determined. So Acadia National Park is where we have spent the last 4 days. This is on an island off the coast of Maine in the Atlantic and you really really know it if you dip any part of your unsuspecting body in the ocean 12 degrees is not warm!
Acadia is beautiful and we did some serious exploring. Determined to spot a whale we booked onto a trip the first day, mistake! We set off in lovely warm sun with warnings from the crew that it MAY be foggy out to sea. This was the understatement of the year. We sped out 30 miles with visibility down to 50 yds and it was freezin. The fog horn was blasting every 3 mins which drove Mark's sensitive ears up the wall. So not a whale in sight.
Next day we set off and found a trail marked 'Up to the Beehive". Undeterred we began the climb which ended up as a huge challenge to my vertigo. The path wound around the side of the mountains on tiny ledges at best and in places was just a series of iron handholds. (pics to follow) At the end was a small, warm lake called the Bowl. A swim was overdue so in we plunged and had a blissful 1/2 hour amongst the lily pads. A picnic on the beach followed and a fishing session. No fish this time! We headed on as had read the The Jordan Pond House served tea and POPOVERS. Didn't have a clue what this delicacy would be but it had to be done just coz of the name. They are big butter pastries like giant Yorkshire Puds with Blueberry jam, yummy and worth the detour.
Mark here....enough of the tea and pastries stuff - I mean Acadia!! Went Kayaking in a 2 man Kayak on long pond - now that is brave of me - Bethany doesn't share and I was within striking distance with a paddle - the scars will heal - she says. One of the hardest things is passing through so much nature straight out of the National Geographic and not being able to cast a line across all the beautiful waters we come across - Bethany has me on a '3 cast and your'e out' rule - apparantly the punishment is another day in a double kayak!
Did whales eventually on a 2nd trip but nothing special really this time - have just read our girls blog from Argentina and that was obviously serious whale watching. I can't stop myself - a quick proud father moment OUR GIRLS GOT THEIR DEGRESS - 2:1 & a FIRST - how good is that !!!!!
In Portland at the moment heading for White mountains next then planning on coming back East to Boston - Will load pics soon.
