Medellin has some good shopping areas just outside our door, I promised Liz a shopping trip to replace the stolen top. However Liz keen to dry some clothes that she hand washed wanted to go to the roof terrace for the time being at least. The clothes were draped over some chairs with Liz standing guard.
Medellin is only at 1600m above sea level so feels far warmer, enough to top up our tans that have faided a bit in the high areas of Columbia.
Having literally watched the clothes dry, I had to pursued Liz that we should have a look around. Liz was happy that I did as we found an excellent shop with all kinds of things to make her pupils dilate. She came back with a scarf and some presents.
Keen to get our moneys worth out of the hostel we watched the end of the new Harry Potter film in the theatre room and shot some pool. We couldn't find anything we wanted to cook to make use of the kitchen so we headed out. As always we had our fun and games trying to find somewhere that had a vegy meal despite lots of restaurants. We eventually found a Thai place, along with Indian and Italian this is normally a good bet. There was one meal at a third the price that was vegy and it was fantastic.
Colombia and particulary Medellin really buy into Christmas. They are very religious, everywhere you with see statues, nativity and street art with a religious theme. One thing the Colombians have is taste and a sense of style. As we drive to the terminal I am amazed on the quantity, scale and beauty of the Christmas lights. In addition the city climbs up a pointy mountain which when seen from afar looks like a gigantic Christmas tree.
Medelin was once the home of the most notorious drug baren and a well dodgy place, however things have changed. The guide book says that here was one of the biggest turnarounds in Latin America, now it is a fresh vibrant city and warm. I am a bit sad to say goodbye to it so soon.
Ahead of us is a 15 hour overnight coach journey to Cartagena for Xmas.
