It's funny how you still wake up early on the days that you don't need to be up. Anyway managed to force myself to stay in bed til 7.30am. After breakfast we walked the 10mins to the train station to get tickets and pay the 5euros to walk on the walking track between the 5 villages. Cinque means 5 in Italian and Terre means terraces/villages. We then walked back to Monterosso and began our journey to the first village called Vernazza, took us about 1.40hrs it was very steep a bit like Bluff hill and it got warm very quickly. Vernazza is a stunning little village on a cliff it reminds me a little of the movie Mama Mia. We had a cold drink and small break before the next leg to Corniglia which was another hour and a half by then the sun was well and truly beaming down like a hot poker we were both saturated with sweat! It is now at least 35oC. It is very up and down hill lots of steep granite/rock steps almost too big for my short legs, you walk past vineyards and olive groves very pretty you can hear the sea below you the track is very narrow with no guard rail, I wouldn't like to fall off! I lost Mark for a short time as he went ahead of me at the end for an emergency toilet stop! Then we had lunch as it was now nearly 2pm, met some Brazilians at lunch very friendly. Then we walked down the 365 steps to the train station to catch the train to Manarola as there had been a land slide and the track was not accessible by foot. Then we walked the last and most famous leg of the track to Riomaggiore which is known as lovers walk, it was flat concrete/tiled track with the water crashing against the rocks below us, very beautiful. By now Mark is absolutely dripping in sweat looking like he is going to have a coronary! Had to revive him with some gelato ha ha. We then caught the train back to Monterosso (it took 7mins by train! and 4 hours to walk - go figure) it was about 5.15pm when we got back, stopped at the local supermarket to pick up supplies for tea. Had much needed cold showers when we got back and had a picnic tea on the balcony of our hotel room with the complimentary bottle of local wine the hotel had given us, think we will sleep well tonight!! Ciao Bellas till next time.
