17th -18th March Jaisalmer
Overnight train arrives at 05:30. We are collected from the station and rested in the rooftop restaurant until day break when we can get our first serious caffiene kick.. The guest house also arranges safari's so we are booked ready for tomorrow.. Cant wait..
Today we mooch around the city & the fort it is incredibly hot cant believe tomorrow we will be sitting on a camel in the desert..
The fort is very large with many tourist traps. The palace for me wasn't as spectacular as Jodpur.. Today Garry & I hit the audio's however whilst we are in the cool thinking ahah we are OK, Alison & Mark get invited to watch the opening ceromony of the Holy festival by the local Marajah of Jaisalmer. this involves wishing someone else "Happy Holy" & then wipe highly coloured paint all over them.
We are off on our safari 08:00 hours taken by jeep to meet our team. There are 6 of us all english and all up for bit of fun!!!
We seated on our own beast and warned to hold on. As the camel starts to rise to his feet the saddle lurches forward ready to throw off anyone who wasnt paying attention and we are off into the dunes. We stop for lunch under the only tree for miles. Our team cook up full lunch of chapatti's dahl fry & masala and Chai of course, even down to peeling fresh vegetables. After enjoying a lazy lunch and sleep we are off again to visit the herdsman village which I have to say was exceptionally clean even had a school for 15 children.. niceties over we plod onto our camp for the night..
We stop at the bottom of some very high dunes. This will be our bed for the night.. Yet another full meal of much the same but hey it works and is very tasty.. The evening is spent drinking very warm/hot beer, local whisky and party games. eventually we all retire to our camel blanket for a night of happy dreams and many many stars...
After a restful night I am awake before sunrise. Well you shouldnt miss this once in a lifetime to watch the sunset & sunrise where the world is so quiet and the skies so clear... Full breakfast we are returning back to reality only after a five hour trek. My legs and bottom are getting very tired now. But hey little pain for a wonderful experience..
