Mark & Robyn's Travels
We flew from London to Salzburg today on British Air, which overall was a good experience. It was fairly hectic getting to Gatwick Airport and even though we left the hotel 3 hours before our flight, we got to gate only 10 minutes before boarding started. Of course as our luck would have it, we were the last possible gate in the airport. Talk about a long haul! One quick story about Robyn--she sometimes has trouble understanding British accents. The flight attendant made an announcement that this was a scheduled smoke-less flight. Robyn turns to me and asks what did he just say and after I told her, she thought he had said this was a "nose-less" flight. Yes-- no noses allowed on this flight. Ya gotta love her.
I was going to avoid the history lesson today since we didn't do much other than travel and walk around the central area of the "Old City" of Salzburg, but what the heck I can't resist. Salzburg is on the Salzach River in the northern area of the Alps. The Celts initially settled the area during the 5th century BC and the Romans combined the multiple settlements into one city called Juvavum in 15 BC. After the collapse of the Roman Empire Juvavum nearly died off but was resettled by a Catholic Bishop who renamed the city Salzburg. The old city, where we are staying, is the birth place of Wolfgang Amedeus Mozart. In fact his house is two blocks from our hotel. However, he chose to live in the "new city." So old or new is pretty irrelevant here-- everything is old. There will be more on Salzburg and the fortress that overlooks the city in tomorrow's blog.
We walked around the city, saw Mozart's birthplace, the Salzburg Cathedral which dates to 776, and stood at the base of the fortress looking up. Anyway, enjoy the few pictures I have uploaded below and I will have more to say tomorrow because we go on a "Sound of Music" tour. Oh boy, can't wait.

Jhon If Wolfgang would raise his arm & put on a blindfold, he'd look a lot like the lady Justice holding the scales...
Debby Mozart looks like a girl in that picture, is he weari g a dress?
Debby So Mark, I really wish you would go ahead and buy the lederhosen for your Sound of Music tour.
Jhon I think that's probably a toga. He sounds like the kinda guy that would've frequented toga parties. (In fact, I heard a rumor that he & Jim Belushi were great drinking buds.)
