Galapagos
So here we are, back in our hotel in Quito again, after 5 days and 4 nights cruising around the Galapagos Islands! It was an amazing experience, especially all the deep water snorkelling - we swam with giant turtles, marine iguanas, penguins and sea lions as well as numerous kinds of beautiful fish. The first time we went out, some people also saw a shark, but luckily I wasn't one of them! We saw lots of birds, including flightless cormorants, pelicans, frigates, blue-footed boobies, and penguins (on the equator!) We hiked up through thick slippery mud to the rim of a volcanic crater, which (if we'd been able to see it through the mist) is 10km across, visited a giant tortoise breeding centre, and saw flamingoes in a lagoon in the middle of a lava field. We met some really nice people, most of them from Sydney, and apart from a Brazilian mother and daughter, we were the youngest of the 31 passengers! All the Australians were retired, most of them in their 70's, but super-fit. They do lots of amazing trips, and next year are taking 3-4 months to travel along the 'silk road' from Istanbul to China!
Tonight we went to the hotel restaurant, and wanted to order some wine to celebrate Father's Day - but there is a law in Ecuador which says they can't serve alcohol on a Sunday! So at least we'll wake up with clear heads! Tomorrow afternoon we set off for home: Quito to Guayaquil, Guayaquil to Madrid, Madrid to Heathrow. We're only at home for 12 hours before we set off again to get the ferry to Ireland, so hope our flights are on time!
We're SOOO excited about seeing you all again very soon........Adios!!
