Hot is one word to describe how it is here, what a difference coming from Oz! We stayed at The Prince of Wales hostel which was nice and it only cost about 5 pound per night including breakfast. Things are starting to get cheaper. When we turned up, the streets were filled with locals hanging around. All men and hardly any women about, we think it was a Sunday thing. We were just hanging out the window for ages, fasinated by what was going on in the streets. What a culture shock!!
On Monday morning we headed straight for the shopping street (Orchard Road) to check out what they had on offer. We dont think we've seen so many shopping centres in one place. We didnt manage to get round them all. Although there was a lot of bargains, we are saving ourselves for Thailand. That evening, we had a wander to Bugis Street - the night markets. We then tasted our first lot of asian food - noodles. Luckily we didnt have to use chop sticks as they had forks. We did panic when we first saw them.
On Tuesday, we went to the zoo. It was amazing. As soon as we walked in, there was monkeys in a tree next to us with no fences. All the way through the zoo, there are no fences. The animals are just seperated using motes and hedges. We got to see loads of different animals including rhinos and hippos. Hippos are so strange. We were walking around in the heat for about 5 hours and its quite tiring. During the fragile forest walk, we had lemars walk right across our pass. When the zoo closed at 6pm, we headed next door to the night safari. At 7.30pm we watched a creatures of the night show and then went on the tram around the zoo. The tram lasted for about 45mins and took us up close to the animals. It was a good experience going around the zoo in the dark as the animals are more active at night.
Wednesday we got up and headed for China Town which is quite hectic with market stools. We had a look around a temple there and then made our way up to the Merlion Park (where theres a famous statue). Just before we got there, we encountered a down pour which are a lot different from the ones at home. We had to run for shelter. We then went to Raffles City Shopping Centre but once again didnt buy anything. Wanted to though - shoes are so cheap!! We then headed to the biggest shopping centre in Singapore - Suntec. It also houses the largest fountain in the world so we went and made a wish while there.
Last night, we headed to Raffles Hotel for a famous Singapore Sling cocktail. It was a very posh hotel and full of rich people. We managed to have a look around the foyer before heading up to the Long Bar for our cocktail. As you sip your drink, they offer you complimentary monkey nuts where you drop the shells on the floor, the only place in Singapore you can litter. As we were finishing our drinks, a waiter came over and just like out the movies, placed down two drinks and said 'these are with compliments from the two gentlemen in the corner'. However as you havent got a clear view of the room, we couldnt figure out who it was. We thought it was our lucky night having baged some rich bacholors. No such luck. It ended up being two 40 plus Americans from the navy. When we went upstairs to where there was a live band, they decided to come and join us and ofcourse, brought over more drinks. We couldnt say no as they are expensive and we were in a classy place. Luckily they didnt stay all night and left us to have us another Singapore Sling before heading back. We really enjoyed ourselves in a classy place even more so that we were only suppose to be going for one.
Singapore is a very clean place and shopoholics would be in their element. This morning, we got the bus to Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia) which took about 6 hours. Tomorrow we start exploring this city.
