My trip to Cambodia didn't get off to the best start. I was waiting for the bus to pick me up, a man came up shouting Ko Chang - obviously I wasn't going there so didn't get up. After half an hour of waiting I started to worry a little, I asked at reception if I could call the bus company to see where they were but they said it was fine and that they were always late. I sat for a bit longer and eventually a woman came up and asked if I was going to Cambodia. It turns out that the man saying Ko Chang was also taking people to Cambodia! We then had to get in a taxi in Bangkok rush hour traffic to meet the bus. By the time we got to the bus it was about 9.30 so I had delayed everyone else by over an hour - oops!
We got the bus to the border where we were told that there weren't any ATM's in Siem Reap and the banks didn't give a very good exchange rate so it was better to get out Baht in Thailand and then change it once we got over the border. When we had had our passport stamped we were then taken off by motorbike to change our money. It turns out that this was a big scam! They gave a really bad exchange rate, nearly half what we should have got and there are plenty of banks and ATM's in Siem Reap. Everyone except one or two people changed their money so they had a good day!! Oh well, a lesson learnt.
On the bus I met two girls who were also going to be staying in Siem Reap for a few days to look around Angkor so I ended up sharing a room and doing a three day tour of Angkor with them as well. It made it much cheaper and also meant I wasn't on my own. We hired a tuk tuk for the three days to take us around - the tuk tuk driver was mad, he found it very funny whenever we asked to stop at the toilet for some reason. His name was Mr. Bean which says it all really!
Angkor was really good, the first day we had a look around some of the temples and were going to go to Angkor Wat for sun set but the heavens open and there was no sun to be seen. The next day we got up at 4.30 to get to the temples for sun rise but once again it was far to overcast to see the sun. After such an early start we were completely shattered by lunch so went back for an afternoon sleep. On the last day we went to the war museum, it was really interesting but very sad, 4-5 people still get injured or killed every day by land mines. We then went to the floating village where people live on the Tonle Sap lake. They had floating schools, police station, pig farms, bars, pool tables - it was great. We then went back to the temples to see the last few.
The other girls were then heading to Phnom Penh, my original plan was to have a day resting in Siem Reap then go to Sihanoukville to the beach for a bit of tanning time but decided that I would stick with them as I was getting on with them.
