First morning in Istanbul we were up at 4.30 am and out the door at 5.00 am as we couldn't sleep due to time difference - our Istanbul adventure just began with nothing but our lonely planet book and map, backpack waters and camera...WTF it's dark there's locals coming out of mosques, its the middle of Ramadan and Doug and I are exploring....by 7 am I have been mugged by a young thug wearing a Manchester United jersey who snatched both necklaces I was wearing and cut my neck in doing so...all whilst Douglas is checking his photo shots he'd taken!!! Reported incident to police, required a translator went back to the incident and police recovered CCTV coverage - time is now 10.30 am flag a taxi, driver would have been 80 in the shade...ripped us of 10 lira and let us off no where near our hotel, at this stage so over it, the expletives come out and Doug slams the cab door hard!
head back to our hotel dragging my feet just in time for breakfast. soon after sore feet bruised neck we got on with our adventure and visited Topkape Palace, Aggia Sofia and the Basilica Cistern. Had dinner at Tria Restaurant's rooftop terrace and had a bloody good red wine I DESERVED IT. I read in our travel guide that the area I got mugged is quite dangerous for tourists and to avoid the areas bordering the old city at dusk...lesson learnt the hard way!
