Hi from İstanbul! We last left you off at Gaziantep as we were about to go for our first real night out of Turkish food & we just wanted to let you know that it was fantastic! We had everything from yummy Turkish pizza... tasty kebahs.... great dips & salads & even sipped on a wee bit of ayran which is a yogurt drink that is made by whipping up yogurt with water & salt... something of a taste to desire like the Aussies vegimite! To end the meal off we stuffed ourselves with some sensational pistachio filled baklava. Mmmmmm good! Other than that the other mouth watering tasty treat that Leanne just recently discovered is... Nestle Chocolate Pistachio bars! Oh... are there ever good!!! (Nıgel... when are is Nestle goıng to come out wıth these in Canada?) From Gaziantep... we traveled on... mountains abounding around us... & you won;t belıeve it... we even saw a frosting of snow on the mountain peaks! Onward ahead we hit Cappadocia... a truly facinating place. İt was here that we enjoyed walking through the Red Valley taking in some spectacular lunar landscape. You will see it in our photos. Another highlight for us was climbing through the underground city... a real interesting experience climbing into one cave after another. Unbelieveable to be there & picture those who lived there before. We saw pigeon holes in the mountians.. strange... & we were told that it was something that locals do to attract pigeons to the area. We thought to ourselves... (Would this be our next meal?). Thankfully we were wrong as we were next told that locals collect the pigeon poo as its the 2nd best fertilizer in the world (behind guana...bat poo!). Crazy! Just imagine how much pigeon poo they would need to make an impact? We were taken to a Carpet Museum (really it was a shop) & Maria & I both picked out some fabulous carpets that we just loved! Maria´s carpet was 1m x 1.5m had a price tage of $1200 & Leanne´s was just a wee little one about the size of 30cm x 45cm & the price tag on it was a whooping $7000! Yikes on both accounts! So rightly so we said thanks & left them in the shop for some other sucker to buy! (Sorry Brent... there was not one for you there!) An overnight bus took us to where we are right now... Istanbul. Today we ventured in the famous basilica St. Sophia & then after prayer time we wandered though the Blue Mosque which was incredible. We´ve got tonight & tomorrow night left & then we will be homeward bound in the big white bird. We have really enjoyed our Middle East trip & hope you too have enjoyed following our adventure! It´s hard to follow the news as it´s in Turkish but we gather that something is happening at the moment on the Turkish Iraq border so maybe it is good that we are leavıng soon. We will stay safe & have fun shopping in Istandbul´s bazaar tomorrow. We got a bit of a taste of it tonight but unfortunately the shops closed earlier than we thought they would. Bye from the MIddle East!
