Hi there everyone,
Yep, I am on the move again with the good old rucksack. This time I'm in Melbourne, Victoria. Just here for a couple of weeks to do some sightseeing. So, Melbourne is cold at the moment compared to Sydney, although people keep telling me I am wrong. Maybe the humidity is just different, I don't know.....anyway.
I haven't had chance to look around Melbourne city yet as off on a tour of the Great Ocean rd (but then I head back to Melbourne). I set off really early this morning on a trip with about 10 other people - most people hire a van or something but due to my lack of driving ability and travel companions its not an option for me. Anyway, its far nicer to take it all in whilst someone else does the driving.
The first place we stopped was at the twist lighthouse. Remember that kids program 'Round the Twist'? Nope, I don't either, but the song is familiar, well apparantly thats where the program was filmed - very useful bit of information there! mmmmm
Next we drove on and saw Koalas in the wild, its great to say that I have done that although there isn't too much difference lookswise, between ones in captivity as they all sleep for 20 hours a day! However, its great to see some free ranging populations.
I then had lunch at Apollo Bay, then to walk it all off we walked through the Otway National Park, which houses ancient rainforest and some of the worlds tallest trees. I think that they were very tall but if I'd tried to look that high up I would have fallen over, you all know me and my vertigo!
We then passed through Port Campbell and onto the highlight of the trip, the 12 apostles. These have been formed by the erosion of limestone headlands over many many years and apparantly used to be called the sow and piglets but they changed the name to make it more appealing to tourists. The views are totally amazing and I got some great photos.
We stopped at some other places down the Great Ocean Rd to get different views of the 12 apostles as the sun began to set.
It was fairly chilly being out on the coast especially as the sun sets but its totally worth it. Its possible to stay at youth hostels along the Great Ocean Rd and take a few days to drive it. I felt although it was a long day, I saw everything I went to see and met some nice people too.
Heading back to Melbourne for hot shower and a few beers with the guys from my youth hostel.............
