Maria's 2006-7 Round the World Trip
Hi there from Krabi, Thailand!
I hope that you are doing well and feeling good as I am sure reading this you are going to be completely jealous at the most amazing 2 days of my life!
From Bangkok, as I mentioned last time, we took a 12 hour overnight train from Bangkok to Surat Thani and then a 2 hour drive to Khao Sok National Park (still in Thailand). We were deep in the jungle and the views were amazing. It was a lot more comfortable than my Madagascar set up and we even had electricity and running water! The jungle huts were lovely, with our own balconies.
I awoke to gibbons calling in the morning, ate my breakfast with long-tailed macaques down by the river and spent the morning trekking through the jungle on the back of an elephant. I have never felt so lucky or happy before! It truly was amazing.
Khao Sok is the oldest rainforest in the world, older than the Amazon because the Amazon suffered from glaciation in the Ice Age, but Khoa Sok didn't (bit of a fact there for you!).
In the afternoon we went for a little 'walk' through the jungle. It turned into walking across a very dodgy bridge over a river, held together by rope, wading through a river and through paddy fields. Needless to say my trainers are drenched and I now have the hotel doing my laundry. I had planned to do it all by myself but it is so filthy I can't - oh well!
I am getting on well with about half the group and we tend to stick together. The other half are quite loud and giggly and slightly annoying at times but I just think it is because they are on holiday and are bothered about getting a bloke, sun tan and drunk. Of course I would like to have all 3 but I am there to see and do as much as possible in the process. But its fine I think I'll stay friends with at least 2 of the girls and there is a couple from Oz who have invited me to stay with them when I get there!
The jungle was just amazing and I even got to watch the football last night, not sure that it was worth watching though......... very disappointed with the boys performance so far but I better not go into that. But yep, we walked through the jungle to find a TV, which we did. It was a bit worrying at one point as we had had a power cut all day but it thank fully came back on in time for the footy.
So this morning we drove for 2 hours to Ao Nang, near Krabi (Thailand) where we will be based for the next 3 nights. It will be nice to stay in one place for a while. The weather is a bit dull but its not as humid as the jungle which makes breathing a little easier! Tomorrow I am off on an island tour and we get to visit Phi Phi Islands (where the Beach was filmed apparently - not that I have a clue about that or any other film). I am looking forward to that and relaxing on a boat / beach.
I am so glad that I booked onto this trip. I really feel that I am getting to see and do a lot more than what I would have by myself. It has also taken the stress out of traveling as everything is organized, all the transport and trips you just have to turn up. Its nice to be part of a group but there is time when you can have some alone time if you need it.
Well, goodbye from Krabi for now. Its so beautiful I might have to send you a postcard.
Lots of love, oh and I hope you like the jungle pics.
