First of all Happy early Thanksgiving! I hope everyone is well and with their families. Last time I wrote we had just finished the lion safari at Sanjay Gandhi's National Park and this week we are at the BSES government hospital again. Monday we saw the closure of a colostomy with Dr. Mehta (the oncological surgeon) and a little bit of the gynecological OPD. On Tuesday Lily and I had to mail off packages and it was a two hour ordeal. We got there with our boxes taped up and ready to go and they were like you have to open the boxes and show us what's inside. Great. So then we had to get them wrapped up in some thick linen, literally stitched up and sealed with wax, then they put our customs forms on them, we wrote the addresses in big lettering and went back inside (they call the wrappers, box-wallas) and the man weighed it, collected the money and put on the barcode for scanning it. We had to tape the customs forms and the barcodes because they weren't "secure" and then that was it. 90 degrees and buckets of sweat later we walk over to the hospital. This is not just any ordinary walk, we have to go through the main market for that area, cross a car-made 8 lane street then go through a "pedestrian subway" where there are people selling underwear, rats and caked up orange colored chewing tobacco on the walls. We get there, the OPD's are closed, there aren't any surgeries and they want us to watch people get their teeth cleaned at their dental office. Yeah right. Today we got to see a woman with Crohn's disease get her ascending colon taken out. They took that part out, cut it open, cleaned it and examined the ulcers. Then they stitched the small intestine to the remaining large intestine, popped a drain in and sealed it up. After that we saw the beginning of a cleft palate surgery which is pretty common here and then we left. Lets see, tomorrow's Thanksgiving and I am taking the day off and Lily is too (even though she's Canadian) and we are going to go to the pool and out to dinner. Getting dressed up and putting makeup on for the third time in 2 ½ months haha. Geez. I have about a week left in India then it's off to Thailand. I am going to Goa this weekend and it should be interesting. Anyway I love and miss you all lots, less than a month now and I am SO looking forward to it. XOXO-Marci
