Danielle's Travels
Well here i am in swelteringly hot Delhi! We have the air con on constantly so it's actually more pleasant to be inside... although i must admit to a few hours of sunbathing on the terrace! Despite the heat and exhausting humidity, the city never stops moving. During the past week i have been exploring the sights of Delhi on various forms of transport, including the infamous bicycle rickshaw. Rather dangerous, but so much fun! I am very impressed with their metro system- it puts ours to shame! In fact there is alot of building work going on as Delhi is apparently holding the commonwealth games here next year.
The Moghul architecture seen in the many temples dotted around the city, is wonderful. It's interesting to see the remnants of colonial Britain amongst the haphazard buildings, especially seen in Old Delhi. This was the worst area for poverty, but generally i'm coping with it pretty well. It's a part of everyday life that one just has to accept here. Despite this the people are friendly and helpful- although i stand out like a sore thumb, so everyone looks at me!! ... Heathers friends have taken me around various markets and historical sites, so i've been quite busy... and so has the credit card! Ooops! I've bought some amazing raw silk and one or two pearls... (Sorry mum- i just couldn't resist! Like mother like daughter hey!) We went to a lovely market called 'Dilli Haat' on wednesday and watched the sunset. The food there was amazing- each stall had food from a different state in India- so there was a fusion of colours and smells, and lots of people buzzing around. Surprisingly, i haven't been too ill. Probably because i have been eating with local people in their homes, rather than just in restaurants/cafes etc. But it's defintely better this way- i've had some great conversations about the two different cultures, and have been able to see India in a different light to how i will see it on my tours.
I met up with an australian girl (Summer) through a mutual friend, so we've been exploring Delhi together- experiencing comic and very frustrating elements of Indian systems and protocols. We visited the Lotus temple yesterday- a striking modern design, built in the 80s. For some reason we thought it would be hilarious to try out two random wheelchairs we saw near the temple, going full speed down a hill. The policeman waiting for us at the bottom didn't find it quite so funny! Ooops!!
I'm travelling to Mumbai tomorrow afternoon- 17 hours on one of India's finest trains... (i wish!) ... i'll probably be squashed between an old lady and a chicken! So a little nervous of what may come my way, but as Summer and i say: 'It's the Indian experience!'- you've just got to ride with it!
Anyway, i'm sitting in the most awful internet cafe you could imagine, so i'm going to shoot off. I'll try and update late next week if i get the opportunity! I hope you're all well! Would be great to hear from you! Lots of love, Dxxxx
