Hiya all of yous
Well let me see, we last left you just as we were gonna check out Olympos..... well we got a break in the continuous rain & ventured up the mountain to find the eternal flames.
Quite a bizarre phenomenom really - there's no rhyme or reason why these flames burn on this particular mountain - there is a mythical legend, but apart from the fact the mountain holds a lot of different gases there is no reason..... It is where the idea for the olympic eternal flame came from tho' & was thoroughly worth the half hour hike up the mountain to investigate - before it rained again!
Now i have to elaborate on this whole weather thing...... talk about 4 seasons in 36 hours - well we've had it with a vengeance!!
First the sun baking in Oludinez... then the gale force winds that nearly blew us away in Oludinez... then the continuous downpour all the way to Olympos, so the next day more torrential rain. We left Olympos (without seeing the ruins) & headed into the mountains en route to Goreme.... We drove straight into the worst and i mean the worst snowstorm ever!! We were travelling in 1st & 2nd gear not daring to touch the brakes, as other vehicles were skating all over the road into each other or into the mountainside - it was hairy scary, far worse than the Alps & Greece & we only covered a total of about 250 miles!! - speaking of which we clocked 3000 miles today ;-)
Anyway - here we are safely in Goreme, which is a world heritage site & you can quite see why.... what a funny little place - with it's amazing volcanic rock formations that people carved caves into to live in & then christians who made churches & monastries out of them. The churches are beautifully painted inside & this was 900 years ago! Eat yer heart out Michealangelo!! ;-)
Tomorrow we are off to explore the region of Cappadocia some more & then head towards the Syrian border - no facebook in Syria but will keep this updated as often as poss.
Til then - take care & be safe - lotsa luv Mandy & Karl Xx
