The port that used to serve Christchurch has never been repaired since the earthquake a couple years back so now the majority of the boats dock at a place called Akaroa, when I say dock I mean anchor down and you tender in to the port. Although we knew we would be tendering into Akaroa, neither of us knew that we did this in the ships own lifeboats, so it was a surprise when we boarded one this morning.
The weather was awful this morning, rainy and foggy and cold so the thought of going sea kayaking was not overly appealing first thing. After a wander through the very small town of Akaroa (where there are only 600 permanent residents) we met up with Kevin who was going to take us and 3 others sea kayaking. We were given some instructions and life jackets etc. then we were off. We spend around 3 hrs in the sea, stopping a couple of times for our instructor to give us some local info. It was really fun, and surprisingly we got the hang of it pretty quick. Not sure exactly how far we travelled but our arms were a bit tired by the end. Unfortunately we didn't get to see the dolphins that normally hang around this area but that’s just the luck of the draw. After we’d finished up we had another walk around the small town and then headed back to the boat for a late lunch. As we were sitting on our balcony around 5pm, we did spot a Hector Dolphin so all was not lost.
We headed to the martini bar and then blu for dinner, since Mandy had bailed early the night before we were determined to go see whatever was on as the late night show. After bumping into an American couple, Ryan and Alex, that we had spoken to before we headed to a show called Liar Liar, it’s the same idea as call my bluff but with a lot more smut. It was funny in places but just as funny was some other people’s laughing. We then listened to some really bad karaoke being sang by Chinese people before it was off to bed.
