I am now writing this 8 months after the event, so details will be a little more sketchy, as I have only my memory to draw upon and not copious notes form a paper journal....
Finally our replacement car arrived, a rather large Nissan 4x4 off-road. We felt like Kings of the Road. And safe again. A relatively short but spectacular drive saw us arrive at our next destination, Doro Nawas. Wow. After driving off-road on a sand track for some 4k, what looked like a mole hill arose out of the ground and got steadily bigger as we approached it. Having parked up, we were greeted with a cold glass of something bubbly and taken into reception to register. Oh my gosh - this was real luxury. I was squeaking away inside when we got talking to an English guy who was travelling around Africa on a motorbike. An inspirational and interesting chap, it was hard to tear ourselves away from his stories, but eventually we did and made our way down to our hut. As we opened the door, what had been internal sqeaking became external. This place was heavenly romantic. We had booked this with the intention of having a couple of days total chill-out time on the recommendation of 2 friends, Emma and Michelle. It surpassed all expectations.
The camp is situated in the ruggedly beautiful Damaraland, specifically within the floodplain of the Huab River. There is nothing around and so allows for an unspolit panoramic view of the landscape - all around you can see tabletop outcrops, cayons, dry river beds and grasslands. This is one of those places the African sky takes your breath away, and so as well as a telescope on the main deck that allows you to see the moon and stars close up, your beds are on wheels and the idea is that you roll them out onto your private balcony/deck and sleep under the stars. I have slept under the stars before, but never in a huge Queen sized bed wrapped up snug in a goosedown duvet and Egyptian cotton sheets.
So, the setting was romantic and chill out we did. Lazy days lying by the pool drinking in the landscape, followed by late afternoon walks, the days completed by some amazing star gazing just about sums up all we did here. There was one other thing that took place that was kind of significant - El proposed! Of course I said yes.
This was a lovely little place. I would have been bored if we'd have stayed another night, but as a stopover on the way south is was a great place to stay and for obvious reasons will always hold a special place in our hearts.
