Chichen Itza...or Chicken Pizza?
Yesterday I spent the day in Chichen Itza, huge ceremonial Mayan Ruins about 3 hrs West of Cancun. The problem I seem to be having however is how to pronounce Chichen Itza, sometimes i get it and othertimes I can't quite remember how I should pronounce it! So Scott cameup with a great way for meto remember the pronounciation - Chicken Pizza! It may sound wierd but the two actually sound very similar.
So...I absolutely hate starting a paragraph with 'so' but I can't think of anything more inventive at the moment...I left Cancun at 6.30am (this sucked as we had all been staying up very late - 3am/4am ish) but slept on the coach. I payed for oneof these tours the Hotels provide because it worked out cheaper and more comfortable than sitting in a small mini-bus with no air-con for 3 hrs.
We stopped of at several stupidly expensive rest stops and I caught up a little on my sleep. When we arrived the place was unfortunately teeming with tourists but the ruins we still very impressive. Especially the Mayan Calander Temple which 70,000 people flock to during the Spring Equinox. The theme in the architecture is pretty much snakes, eagles and jaguars. The snakes stand for new life apparently.
My weakness is small kids and old women selling things, as I discovered while at the ruins. I bought so many little embroidered hankerchiefs! Still managed to get some pretty cool stuff though.
We went to this all you can eat place for lunch and then I discovered there was an addon which I did not know about- cave swimming. I was really dissappointed to find out that you had to book this in advance, until a lovely lady in her late 40s decided she didn't want to go and let me go instead!
It was amazing just to be able to jump into this cool, refreshing water. Though apart from me only one other person fromour group swam, everbody else was content with looking at the beautiful cave. The water was teeming with catfish and it was brilliant to just go snorkling and jumping of the viewing platforms (though not strictly allowed was definetly worth it!).
When I go back the girls and Alex and Theo had gone to Isla Mejeres so I was a bit dissapointed till I discovered Scott was still here which was great, we agot a chanceo hang out and discuss travelling and where I should go etc. Also the Canadians, Geff and Dave were still here -Dave a little worse for ware after his immunistaions. So we had a great evening.
