Day 88 - Kuala Lumpur
Another lie in (its all this walking around i think tiring us out!) and we just make the free brekky again. Only 2 geckos in the kitchen this morning though :(. We met a lovely couple over breakfast who are also travelling but are doing the opposite direction to us. They have already done Thailand which is where we will be heading soon and they are off to Singapore and then Australia so we spent quite a while exchanging stories and giving advice on destinations etc. We didn't stop gasing until gone dinner time so unfortunately we'll have to give the Caves a miss.
We also met one of the local guys that works in the hostel and he knew our names from looking who had checked in. He said mine was a very unusual name (dont think he'd heard it before) and said that when he saw that someone called Simon Lee was checking in he was expecting to see someone from Singapore or Hong Kong because of his surname ... Si now thinks he's one of the locals!
Once we're ready we have to figure out the tram/train system here and for anyone who is planning to come here we would recommend getting a touch and go card as other wise you have to buy a seperate ticket for every station that you get on/get off at which isn't expensive but can be quite time consuming when you have to change 3 or 4 times. Also you have to be careful which carriage you get on as on some of the trains the middle carriage is for women only.
One of the stations we have to change at is called Mid Valley which has a mall next to it so we decide to go and have some lunch in the mall before continuing on our journey. We both opted for a Malaysian meal, Si had their version of fried rice which is apparently very salty and I had Nasi Lemak which is rice with chicken in a curry sauce, a boiled egg and cucumber ( a bit of everything basically) it was really nice, the curry sauce was quite spicy but I soldiered on through and ate it all! I also ordered an apple juice and when it came it was bright green?! The taste makes you realise why though it was just like they had blended a granny smith or something ... nice though.
We had a walk around the shops before making our way back to the tram/train station and continuing our journey. When we eventually reach our stop we have to find the coach station so that we can buy our tickets for tomorrow when we head to Penang except when we get there we realise its not a coach station but lots of little stalls inside a tent that sell you tickets for the coaches lining up outside. Anyway a guy shows us to the right counter and we buy our tickets for about £7 each bargain!
After we've bought our tickets its starting to get dark and its time to head home to pack etc ready for check out tomorrow.
We've had a nice time in Kuala Lumpur but the city is still developing in so many ways, we'd both come back but maybe not for a few years when there's more to see ... and maybe get another chance to see the Batu Caves!
