We left our hotel in Pai at 7.30 on Tuesday morning. Our minivan back to Chiang Mai left Pai at 8 and the journey was really twisty which left Beth feeling a bit nauseous. It took about 3 hours to get back to Chiang Mai so we arrived at about 11am. We thought we would just be able jump straight on a bus to Chiang Rai but the queue to buy tickets for the bus was unbelievably long. It took is about an hour to make it to the front of the queue where we got tickets for the 12.15 bus to Chiang Rai. We grabbed some food quickly from a shop in the bus station and then jumped on the bus for the 3 hour journey to Chiang Rai. This time we were on a proper bus and the roads were a lot less twisty so Beth slept
most of the way.
When we made it to Chiang Rai, we were ushered into the back of a pick up truck by a local driver and he got us to our hotel for 100 baht. The hotel we are staying in, Cordelia, is alright and considering we are paying about £8.50 a night we are more than happy. On Tuesday night, we had a look around Chiang Rai and went to a local shopping centre where we have to admit that we had a McDonald's for tea!! Whilst we were walking to the shopping centre, there were swarms of these flies around any kind of light they could find and we saw some massive cockroaches scuttling around on the ground.
We got up quite late today as I had decided to get up at half 2 in the morning to listen to the Newcastle game. We both decided that we needed a haircut so Beth went to a respectable looking salon whilst I went to the first barbers I found which was about 30 seconds away from our hotel. The hairdresser couldn't speak a word
of English so I relied on a scissors motion with my fingers which sort of worked. He then decided to shave my face with an electric shaver which was interesting and then he dabbed my face for some reason with a pink towel which was a bit much for my liking!!! I can't really complain for 45 baht!!
We've had a quiet day for the rest of the day and haven't really had a chance to see any of the sights which Chiang Rai has to offer. Tomorrow, we leave Thailand and head to Laos. This involves us getting up at 5am to get the 6am bus to the Laos border. Our plan is to catch a slow boat at 11am once we are over the border to the Laos city of Luang Prabang. This should take 2 days with an overnight stop in between.
